Worrying talk on trans issues by UK gov advisor hosted by Amnesty International Northern Ireland

I am only a short way in and it is so much worse than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it was going to be bad. Usual misrepresentations and dismissal of women's concerns, we are funded by the US right etc. Very worrying that this nonsense is being promoted by Amnesty, and a potentially influential governmemt advisor.

Well worth a listen though, as this person seems to be active at advising/campaiging at EU and UN level, and is also an advisor to the UK government (they are on the UK LGBT advisory panel).

This is a bio of them with some relevant information:
"My current focus is on bringing Northern Ireland trans rights into the context of international human rights work, and have worked at European Union and United Nations level to progress this."

Interestingly they mention that they are autistic with a history of severe mental illness. I thought in their talk that they did not understand the concern over austistic children. I don't know how to interpret what they said said now.

Is that the individual from Transgender NI?

They are another of these organisations who give advice to schools telling them that if young girls are uncomfortable with a male body in their changing rooms then they need to be re-educated. My child's school website posts links to this organisation and I am currently trying to gather together a few parents to raise our concerns as a group. A very sinister organisation, and this person gets a lot of media attention to promote it.

It seems so obvious to me that if a child sees a male person in the ladies, that person is likely to be a dodgy man to be avoided.

God knows what the prevalence or even the definition of ‘really trans’ people is, but dodgy blokes are two a penny.

You would expect these big organisations to have done some homework before making sweeping statements others are funded by right wing organisations. It puts their credibility at risk otherwise and opens them up to counter accusations. Yet they all do it.

Have they mentioned the suicide statistics too?

I think the most worrying aspect of all this is that 'The world's leading human rights organisation' (wikipedia) doesn't seem to have a basic grasp of what a human right is or why they might be necessary.

It's as though all progress since the 1970's was just a smokescreen that has hidden rampant institutionalised homophobia and sexism for the past 50 years.

The only logic behind adding T to LGB is the belief that gay and trans people are basically the same because gay men are all effeminate and lesbians are really men. It's stereotypical rubbish. Include all the people who seem to think their human rights aren't being recognised because they are 'demisexual' and the whole thing becomes a farce whose only point is to access money from Budweiser.

Nobody needs to know what a woman is to take away my rights. All they have to do is assume that the default human has an average height of 5' 10" and will suffer no long term physical side effects from sex.

I do need to be able to define what a woman is to protect my rights, but according to Amnesty that might be psychologically damaging for some people, so you know, rights, whatever really.

isabellerossignol · 09/08/2019 08:44

Amnesty have also had sympathy campaigns and petitions for at least one transgender person, male to female naturally, whose rights are being brutally breached by making them serve their prison sentence in a male prison. I can't remember what country it was, possibly Iran. My oh so woke 20 year old loud feminist niece was sharing it all over Facebook asking for signatures and all her 20 year old friends were chiming in with how terrible it was and I could have cried with frustration at their lack of concern for the actual women prisoners.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/08/2019 09:04

Amnesty International is one of the worst organisations in the world as far as I’m concerned. I’m horrified I donated to them for years.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 09/08/2019 09:10

Amnesty is a lost cause- Colm O’Gorman has totally lost the plot and it’s tricking down.

They can’t see the inherent racism of campaigning to remove single sex protections in the UK, but fighting for them in refugee camps and girls schools in Africa and Asia

MrsSnippyPants · 09/08/2019 09:18

Says it all really

Just a wee reminder that this person stood as a Green Party candidate in West Belfast and is on record calling women TERFs and dismissing scientific research into hormones and PB.

Every time a chugger corners me for Amnesty I tell them exactly why I will never donate to them.

CumannNamBan · 09/08/2019 11:27

Hi Isabelle, yes, they are the executive director of Transgender NI.

Sorry the links above did not come out as proper clicky links.
