I hadn't either, until reading more about the Dayton, OH shooting.

I knew there were growing subcultures in the US that spew toxic misogyny and incel garbage. I had no idea this existed. No public venue should ever allow this a platform. Truly horrified. This is the world my daughters will have to navigate.

It’s clear that the internet is a tool for radicalisation and that we are not having the right kind of conversations about it. It reinforces hatred for women quite apart from reality and any relationships these men presumably have IRL

Also ‘caped’ as a verb? ugh.

Goosefoot · 07/08/2019 18:09

More and more I think the internet might actually be the real problem (as I type away...)

I was discussing this with someone with regards to the shootings. They were taking the usual left gun control argument, and I realised, while clearly the US is weird about guns, and maybe changes in the law might have some effect on mass shootings, I no longer believe that is the main driver behind these incidents. It may be that it used to be, but now I think it has become it's own thing, a kind of cultural trope. And that mostly it's been driven by media exposure and social media.

Porn is similar. Porn is not great, ever, but when distribution is controlled by the means it has natural limits. Not only did it mean there wasn't as much of it, that meant it didn't need to become as extreme. With the internet, it's increasingly limitless, which is not good when human beings have limitless appetites.

Disgusting music like this has been around a long time.

I remember being a teen and seeing bands such as “Cannibal Corpse” and “Cradle of Filth” and not thinking much of the mostly grotesque lyrics (or if anyone remembers the little American neo nazi girls who had a band called Prussian blue)

Although I hadn’t heard of pornogrind either,

I think all that can really be done is keeping an eye on what our kids are listening to and explaining to them the rights and wrongs in different types of genres.

I wouldn’t want to just demonise metal in general and I can easily see how that could happen.

Goosefoot

Up until the past decade of so, for all of humanity, there have been natural, physical barriers to communication, be it geography or time. With the advent of the internet and smart phones, all of those barriers are gone. We literally live in a world where anyone can communicate any idea at any time to the entire planets virtually instantaneously, with no barriers, and no accountability.

Remember the old philosophical question along the lines of "If you could rob a store, cheat on a partner, kill someone or what have you, and no one would ever know, and you would never be caught, would you do it?" The underlying premise being, how would you behave outside of any constraints, where you alone are responsible? Well, the internet pretty much allows that question to be answered, and for the whole world to see.

To Learn About the Far Right, Start With the ‘Manosphere’
The sexist world has become a recruiting ground for potential mass shooters.

By Helen Lewis

In the same vein, this article is a very good one which reflects on connection between anti feminist movements and far right violence.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/08/2019 19:59

In Helen's article, one of the interviewees saying that people are starting to pay attention to the misogyny that is contributing or driving these mass killings (both white male supremacy and Islamic jihadis). There is always a background of misogyny or domestic violence when the killer's past is looked into.

But I feel like it's only women talking about it. I still don't feel like men really take it seriously.

samyeagar · 07/08/2019 20:06

Oh, plenty of people, men and women are talking about gun violence in the USA, though not necessarily the misogynistic angle. The problem is, that guns and gun violence is far too valuable of an issue for the various sides vying for power as a means of energizing their supporters for there to actually be anything meaningful done.

Another article on this subject that adamantly refuses to mention pornography and is therefore missing a vital arena of male social influence. "Pornocore" is red herring bullshit, boys aren't bringing themselves to orgasm multiple times a week listening to music.

Close enough doesn't cut it for me anymore, feminist writers need to be braver than this.

GeorgeFayne · 08/08/2019 04:15

So many great comments here!

We talk A LOT about guns here in the US. Both political parties use it to draw donations and increase voter turnout, and I have long suspected they don't really want anything to change.

What we are not discussing is the role of male violence in mass shootings. We are not talking about the effects of frequent exposure to graphic, hard core pornography in the development of young male brains. We are not evaluating the selfish and limited world view many of our young adults are exhibiting. It's all related. All of it. I'm so sick of this crap.

Where to escape? I can't say that it looks all that much better for women in the UK or Europe. Certainly not Canada and their forced ball waxing! If only my husband and I could afford to buy our own island...
