Wondering about Birmingham school protests

Saw something online about this yesterday, and it suddenly occurred to me that there is only one narrative being backed by the MSM - the parents are wrong, they're lying about what's being taught, and it's all being whipped up by agitators. All of that is probably true, but then I thought about what's been slipped in under the radar. We know about some of it from that clergyman who, IIRC, resigned as a school governor.

It would be interesting to know what proof the protestors have, of their claims.

The school uses no outsiders and one of their lesson plans is based on "I'm Leo" where puberty blockers are discussed light heartedly/promoted. Considering the harm that puberty blockers can cause I'd think that is at least a valid and evidencible complaint.

Here is a video by that strange Twitter account that was blocking gay people according to Penis News. It goes through some of the materials in No Outsiders and provides comment so you can get an idea of what objections the parents have and to which parts of No Outsiders.

The thing is that this is a complex issue and any attempt to sort it into simplistic tribal politics will be wrong. There are issues of child development, importance of boundaries, parent rights, homophobia and much more.

I don't like No Outsiders in toto because I think it introduces future sexual identities to children at too early a developmental stage, attempts to teach what should be absorbed naturally in family life, and does not address the issue of the protected characteristic of sex nor the importance of giving girls (and boys for that matter) tools to assert boundaries. I also object to "wrong body" nonsense being presented as fact.

Others will have different objections and some of those I will heartily disagree with.

I don't object to equalities programmes for primary schoolers that use the protected characteristics as examples in anti bullying material or that explain non standard family shapes (eg two mums/two dads) are fine and accepted in contemporary Britain.

It's not good vs bad here at all. It's not as easy as that.

Completely agree. I normally like Jess Phillips (sp?) but saw her facing off with the parents a few weeks ago and thought she was being very authoritarian.

This article looks into the queer theory origins of No Outsiders, which sound pretty disturbing to me:

I've been in and out all day, and gave up watching that video around the fifteen minute mark. If I saw all that claptrap I wouldn't have wanted my children watching it. Perhaps I'm biased, but I thought it was sending the gay-is-ok message at the expense of girls. Why should girls have to sit in a class and see all those messages about how boring and unimportant they are? Boys feel that way at seven or eight anyway, why confirm to girls that it's a justifiable opinion?

I didn't like any of it, I thought it all had an agenda and that agenda wasn't just that people can be different and that's OK.

Maybe I'll go back and suffer through the rest, and find it's more female friendly. I'd like to see what's said about heterosexual relationships.

Oh FFS we're onto drag, and referring to the boy as she! The mother is sitting in the kitchen cutting out coupons. He goes for a walk after someone (a horrible sister?) threatens to kick him for wanting a dress. He comes on an older girl - an unimaginative drudge sewing unimaginative dresses, and offers to help her make something imaginative.

How can teachers possibly impose this on children? Have all these people who are poohpoohing the ignorance and intolerance of the protestors actually looked at what is being taught?

It is very convenient to demonise muslim parents in order to distract from the actual content of the No Outsiders programme. Remember, these are young, primary age children, not teenagers.

Juells · 03/08/2019 17:16

The unconscious bias against females is screamingly obvious. And the association of wanting fancy dresses with being really a female in a boy's body.

I think if the parents were actually asked what is was specifically about the No Outsiders teaching, that they object to, the majority would quite reasonably say-too much too young, children can't be born in the wrong body. Its possibly the T bit they really are concerned about.

to let gay men and lesbians be the collateral damage.

Lesbians and children already are the collateral damage.

Please stop throwing gay and lesbian people under a bus to support the anti-trans campaign.

Oh, read the comments and stop saying stuff has been said that hasn't been said.

Already said.

You drop the support of equalities teaching that ignores the needs of girls. You drop the support of queer theory promotion that masquerades as LGB supportive material. Stop trying to paint this as black and white. Then we can talk.

happydappy2 · 03/08/2019 18:06

hippo so some parents are protesting about L&G but you can’t possibly know what all of them are protesting against....this is a primary school, no protests at the secondary are there?

Endofthedays · 03/08/2019 18:19

A lot of gay and lesbian have thrown themselves under the bus by associating their rights with transgenderism.
