Video of University of Edinburgh Event on the Future of Sex-Based Rights

Hi All (or should that be bigots!),

I was one of the speakers at the Edinburgh event discussing sex-based rights in June. What none of us have been able to mention until now is that the University of Edinburgh refused to post the video of the event anywhere on-line (it's pretty standard to post the recordings on whatever uni system is used) because they said it risked causing upset to current and future transgender students. After weeks of us objecting, they have finally posted our talks on YouTube (and have disabled comments).

My Twitter thread about it is here:

mobile.twitter.com/drlouisejmoody/status/1154671373710757888

And the YouTube vid is here:

Forwomen Scots are, I think, also going to make the video available on their site.

Obviously, I am appalled that, having given our time and travelled at our own expense, Edinburgh originally refused to host the video anywhere, especially given the assault on Julie Bindel upon leaving. And I'm seriously unimpressed by not allowing anyone to comment on the video. We should have been publically supported as refusing to post the video gave credence to the lie that our talks were in some way hateful. We have all had to tolerate abuse whilst Edinburgh remained studiously silent.

That is unforgivable,

See you in the Twitter-verse,

Louise

Thanks for this Louise. So sorry that you were all treated so appallingly by a so-called place of higher education. Nothing higher about it in my opinion. It's regressive and stifling. Makes me glad that my degree is in art. Although we do have a lecturer who lives and breathes Judith Butler...

littlbrowndog · 26/07/2019 13:26

Thanks Louise.

Why disable comments 🤔🤐

And why so long for Edinburgh university to post the vid.

Are they trying to hide something like this wasn’t a hateful event and now everyone can see this

TriptychDebbie · 26/07/2019 13:29

Have also shared this elsewhere if that's okay?

littlbrowndog · 26/07/2019 13:31

And why aren’t women allowed to speak.

And and why would trans gender ppl be upset by the fact that women get together and speak about things the affect women directly. 🤐🤐🤐

Can I be upset that I wasn’t allowed to see this video and not allowed to comment 🤐🤐🤐🤐

Did Edinburgh university not think about women or are we just not that important

DrLouiseMoody · 26/07/2019 13:35

Triptych and anyone else,

Yes, please share as widely as possible!

Thanks Louise. Sadly can't share on Twitter any more due to my suspension Blush

I have nothing but applause for the succint, excellent, background to Human Rights and Women's Rights given by RosaFreedman1983 in that event.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 26/07/2019 14:33

Thank you for sharing and am sorry you were treated so badly. It is incredibly frustrating. Will share with others.

TurboTeddy · 26/07/2019 15:41

Thank you for sharing, the speakers were excellent and I was applauding from the sofa. I can see why the University wouldn't host it, far too reasonable and it would be discriminatory to remove TRA's entitlement to grievance.
I was a little bit disappointed with the Q & A. I fully support trans rights but I do not think it is the job of women to develop solutions to the issues they face, there is too much to do to protect our own rights which we are doing with far smaller financial resources.

Hi, as Louise says we've also got the film here as well as transcripts from Louise, Rosa, Sarah and Lucy.

Rosa didn't manage to finish her speech, so this is full text!

DrLouiseMoody that's terrible that Ed Uni treated you badly. Selfishly, I'm very glad you gave the talk. I just watched the video and I think it's brilliant, you're all so articulate and full of knowledge and fabulousness. Ed Uni should be shouting from the rooftops that this wonderful video is available and taking credit that they helped make it happen, not skulking in the corner looking the other way. Thank you also SusanSmithFWS for the transcripts.

Thought we'd dip into this thread to say that the presentation by Lucy Hunter Blackburn in this video refers to a paper that was published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Scottish Affairs.

It's available on an open access basis so you can read the full text here: www.euppublishing.com/doi/full/10.3366/scot.2019.0284

The rest of our work (done on an unpaid basis, we hasten to add! and squeezed in around our other responsibilities) can be found here: www.mbmpolicy.wordpress.com
