There’s a film coming out (pardon the pun) which was first lauded because it has a diverse lgbtq+ cast and is about the lgbtq+ community.

However, lots of the lgbtq+ community (including those that are in the film) are now denouncing it because in fairness, it’s an awful film with a horrifying plot. The thing is, if you substituted the man pretending to be a transman for a man being a transwoman, I think it’d be received as a stunning and brave film. It’s all very confusing and the irony meter is working overtime. Eg this series of tweets about it from a transwoman includes the phrase “to imply our identities our just costumes for other people to put on erases who we are as people”.

Oh the irony in that final comment! Now they know how women feel then, don’t they! I for one am bloody sick of womanhood being reduced to a mythical “feeling” or a costume for men to appropriate.

So it's not ok for someone with a dick to pretend to be a lesbian? They are all a big fat bunch of TERFs!Grin

Having looked at the statement by the director, it seems they worked hard to address the "pretending to be trans" issue by having the main point of view being that of "Ernst", a female who identifies as trans, and who is deceived by Adam, a male who pretends to be a female who identifies as trans. And who is obviously hurt by this. This may have worked as intended as audience reactions and critics' verdicts (incl. LGBT ones) seem to be largely positive.

However, what I cannot seem to find is any statement about the main and far worse issue with the book's story which gives credence to the trope that lesbians can be cured of their lesbianism by just meeting the right guy. And obviously there's the fucking rapey nature of the premise of the whole book - a teen boy pretending to be a female who identifies as trans in order to sleep with lesbians. Because most females who identify as trans are indeed lesbians and therefore are, of course, dating other lesbians, so by pretending to be the former he gets to have sex with the latter. Like no one can tell the difference between a male body and a female body. And why does he need to target lesbians in the first place? Why not just focus on straight girls?

Anyway, plenty of statements from director, cast, crew, production company that no, there was no transphobia on set, no one was misgendered, accidentally or otherwise, everyone had their Trans 101 guide to refer to - IOW no trans-identifying person was hurt during the making of the movie, they assure us.

And absolutely nothing about lesbians.
