Hairy legs

MIdgebabe · 24/07/2019 21:15

So in the heat should I have hairless legs/Pitts becuase the hair acts like a nice warm blanket

Or hairy legs/Pitts becuase the sweat can trickle down the hairs increasing my surface area for evaporation

?

Shave one side but not the other and record your results.

Bananalanacake · 24/07/2019 21:19

I like your surface area theory. I don't shave my legs cos I can't be arsed. shave my pits though.

IamtheOA · 24/07/2019 21:19

How do you prefer to keep your legs?
Do that.

MIdgebabe · 24/07/2019 21:23

I do like the experiment idea.

Do what you want. It's getting a bit boring now.

In the remotest chance that anyone cares I always shave underarm as I think it makes anti-perspirant work better.

I always shave my legs if am I wearing sheer tights as looking well groomed is important. (India Willoughby was talking nonsense about unshaven legs being dirty but they do not look good on a highly groomed/ dressy outfit)

It would have to be so hot it was declared a national disaster for me to go to the office with bare legs.

If you shower every day you shouldn't need anti-persperant. Personally don't think that the chemicals used in it are healthy at all.....the body is meant to sweat. Wouldn't surprise me at some future point if anti-persperants were linked to breast cancer.

LassOfFyvie · 24/07/2019 22:14

Just about everything is linked to cancer. Latest is orange juice.

Re showering every day, which I do, I think you might be confusing anti- perspirant and deodorant

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 24/07/2019 22:17

You can get nice herbal deodorants now without chemicals in them. I find shaving my armpits helps the deodorant too, wasn't it the Romans who worked out that hairy armpits = increased bacteria = increased smell? They were big into hygiene with their aqueducts!

ShirleyPhallus · 24/07/2019 22:19

Judging by the number of people who shower each day AND use anti-perspirant AND are still stinky afterwards please please do not stop using deodorant, especially in this heat!

RNBrie · 24/07/2019 22:21

I am currently letting my leg hairs grow and I have not noticed any heat conductivity differential. I was, however, foolish enough to wear polyester today and I can confirm that despite showering every day, I really really need deodorant Grin

Xraydog · 24/07/2019 22:25

I stopped using anti perspirant 2 years ago, sweating definitely keeps me cooler. I do use an excellent natural deodorant though.
As for leg shaving my theory is that if you wear shorts for long enough your hair is bleached as you tan and actually looks perfectly fine. I haven’t shaved my legs in 20 years.

LassOfFyvie · 24/07/2019 22:37

I don't want sweat stains on my clothes.

You are probably right about bleaching and tanning except I go to great lengths not to tan.

The Japanese don't wear anti perspirant. True story.

TeamUnicorn · 24/07/2019 23:08

I have recently discovered the wonder that is Mitchum Ultimate. I don't put it on at bedtime though like they say though.

I think hairless otherwise you have a means to trap warm air.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 24/07/2019 23:27

I wasn't sure if I was allowed to share the deodorant I was talking about in case it was classed as advertising or something but since another poster has mentioned theirs, the one I use is Tisserand Lavender and Clary Sage deodorant. It won't stop you stinking as much as an anti-perspirant deodorant but it smells wonderful and keeps B.O at bay without the chemicals :)

LassOfFyvie · 24/07/2019 23:37

The lady version or the men's version? Does it leave white residue on clothes?

Whatisthisfuckery · 24/07/2019 23:38

I have wonderfully furry legs and I’ve been showing them off wearing shorts. The hair is long and dark and I don’t give a shit. The time I save not shaving my legs, or scratching the annoying itchy rash I get can be reinvested into writing annoying posts on the internet about how few fucks I give.

Judder · 24/07/2019 23:54

I've never shaved my legs or pits. I just don't think about it. Occasionally I raise my arm and notice somebody recoiling slightly with horror. But aside from that there are no disadvantages and many advantages - mostly that I don't have to bother with such a tedious task. So I say, let it grow ...

barelove · 25/07/2019 00:12

Two percent of people carry an unusual form of a specific gene (ABCC11) that means their armpits never smell.

The finding came from new research involving 6,495 women who are enrolled in the Children of the 90s study at the University of Bristol, England, and was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

In the study, 117 (2%) of the subjects were lucky enough to carry this gene that allows them to never have to worry about using deodorant. However, the researchers discovered that over 75% of those people with the gene who do not produce under-arm odor still put deodorant on anyway.

The only time my hairy, never deodorised pits smell are when I've produced sweat from fear. If I'm walking home alone, late at night and I notice a bloke walking behind me, I'll produce this smelly sweat. May be that's the 'fear' that they say dogs can smell?

NoSquirrels · 25/07/2019 00:32

Hasn't this happened already?

I have quite hairy pits today, and quite hairy legs.
I do notice that deoderant is more effective on a smooth armpit. But mostly I cannot be fucked too much. My legs I shave if I plan an event - work, social, groomed necessary - but I don't worry if I'm in shorts at the park or the beach with stubbly or hairy legs. Usually what happens is at said park/beach etc I notice my ankles looking rather hirsute and remind myself to do something about it. But then I'll forget some longer etc.

Eh - the older I get the MUCH less bothered I am. There will be a lesson in that.

Men don't shave their armpits, do they smell worse than women? Serious question, I have no sense of smell.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 25/07/2019 00:38

P.S. If you use a roll on liquid deo/anti-P it works just fine with hairy pits. It's only a problem if you try and use one of those cream ones.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/07/2019 01:37

they have all got fucking chemicals in... everything is made up of chemicals... [pedantic]

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 25/07/2019 01:49

Haha fair enough BlackeyedGruesome, but these herbal deodorants are free of known toxic chemicals. I'm not a scientist but from what I can gather the toxicity seems to be connected to whether it's anti-perspirant or not, the herbal deos are not anti-perspirant so you still sweat but don't smell quite as bad, they seem to neutralise B.O somewhat. You can get really simple deodorants from places like Lush that use baking soda but I find it makes me itch, it must work for some people though. My point is, not all deodorants are dreadful baddies, some are our friends!
