Plane spotting

Oh FFS
BBC4 programme plane spotting and they interview a woman pilot. Great news as women are still in a minority so it's good to have the visibility. This one has been flying for BA since the 1970s. Odd that when BA only started taking female pilots in the 1980s.

oh FFS.

So they couldn't even rustle up a biological women to speak to? Standard.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 20:35

Oh i seeeeeeee

Could not work that out for a minute

FFS is right!

Erythronium · 23/07/2019 20:37

It was always going to go this way. Male women in positions women don't normally hold mean men can say we've got equality now. It's big in tech apparently.

Longdistance · 23/07/2019 20:40

She is a woman, I’ve flown with her, and her husband is a captain too.

Orlandointhewilderness · 23/07/2019 20:40

My brother is a pilot and has flown with many women pilots. His view is that actually the industry is keen to recruit women these days, women get equal pay and everything is done on an even footing. He did ponder that the smaller number of women pilots might be more to do with the fact that historically it has been a male dominated industry which has put more women off it?

Orlandointhewilderness · 23/07/2019 20:41

And yes, she is a woman.

WrathofStrawberryWhittleKlop · 23/07/2019 20:46

I would imagine the BA pilot will have a long and comprehensive CV.

Full of male achievements.
Ffs

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 20:46

And yes, she is a woman

Well that’s awesome

Im not watching the programme but how did she manage to do that in the 70’s if mac is right about women pilots

VikingVolva · 23/07/2019 20:47

And although she qualified (and took full control of the planes, if that's the right terminology for being the senior pilot on a flight), she was first employed by BA in the 1970s, and completed her training and junior roles with them (8 year training path)

So the penny that needs to drop is understanding they included of the length of employment as trainee when giving the dates.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 20:51

they included of the length of employment as trainee when giving the dates

Cool

Womenspire 2016 Personal Achievement Award.

Am I impressed?

No
Not a woman

RiddleyW · 23/07/2019 20:55

Womenspire 2016 Personal Achievement Award

Did the pilot get this?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 20:56

Womenspire 2016 Personal Achievement Award

Just googled that...

RiddleyW · 23/07/2019 20:58

I googled it too and can’t see the link

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 21:02

The pilot appears and gets her award riddley

On the video i watched a bit of at any rate

RancidOldHag · 23/07/2019 21:02

I guess she must mean thus:

www.walesonline.co.uk/business/business-news/domestic-abuse-campaigner-endurance-runner-11200628

There were 5 joint winners, but it's not clear to me whether the pilot here is the one on theBeeb programme. She is not the one that previous posters have been discussing (start as BA trainee pilot. In the 197)

WrathofStrawberryWhittleKlop · 23/07/2019 21:05

Yep
Brave and stunning

RiddleyW · 23/07/2019 21:06

Oh right I see thank you.

RiddleyW · 23/07/2019 21:07

So is that the pilot from planespotting?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 21:08

captain Catherine Burton had 40 years flying experience when she announced her gender transition to British Airways colleagues on an online forum in 2014

Yep, Catherine was who i meant

But yes ive no idea if its Catherine on the tv show

Orlandointhewilderness · 23/07/2019 21:32

Ahhhhhhhh I'm getting you now!

Wrong subject and end of the stick completely on my part!
Apologies!

WrathofStrawberryWhittleKlop · 23/07/2019 21:33

The planespotting pilot might well be a different TW.

Not really.

It is so good to know that women are winning awards for their efforts.

It is so good women are represented in the media in male dominated professions

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 21:34

orlando

I find it can be very difficult to get the right end of the stick nowadays

I frequently find Ive got the wrong end

WrathofStrawberryWhittleKlop · 23/07/2019 21:44

Rufus and Orlando

The right or wrong end of said stick, who cares. It's just banter innit.

But then again I don't get the words sex and gender muddled up in official documents hoping no one notices.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/07/2019 21:49

Good point well made there wrath
