Horrified to read this, I shouldn't be any more but it felt like it should be documented/posted here / added to the War on Women that I read yesterday (thanks @Glinner)

Fuck, she just asked politely to be left alone.

Apologies if not a clicky link, I don't post much of late

Absolutely awful.

And why is the police commisioner making "of course we must track down the perpetrators" noises when, according to the victim, the police haven't even been arsed to show up and take a statement from her?

BillytheMountain · 16/07/2019 18:12

Thanks for making it clicky mangoes

Totally NotMetExpectations it's barely even lip-service.
I feel quite sick to think that a polite decline is met like this, she has a blood clot in her eye, and the police just can't be arsed.

I hope this article gets someone with some official capacity to take this seriously. It's like it's just okay, the wider signals here are so worrying for us all.

This made Metro as well, on the same page as another story about male sexual entitlement.

I've had my face grabbed by a man and been spat on by another and called an "ugly fucking cunt bitch" by a third for saying "no, thank you", all when I was under 20. Men have no idea how frightening it can be just being near them.

AnyFucker · 16/07/2019 19:29

Could somebody help me out here. This poor girl...were both her eyes cut and swollen in exactly the same place ?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 20:41

That last was a reverse image, I think. Wonder why they didn't fix it?

AnyFucker · 16/07/2019 20:44

That's what I was assuming (and hoping), CAS

LassOfFyvie · 16/07/2019 21:53

I'm shocked as well by the apparent lack of interest in A&E in treating her eye.

The original photo was a selfie so reversed.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 22:12

Thanks for clearing that up. Never having taken a selfie I didn't know they came out reversed!

AnyFucker · 16/07/2019 23:07

Ok. Thanks.

Fraggling · 16/07/2019 23:36

Thanks for posting this.

I'm glad this is in the papers and not surprised the police aren't interested.

This sort of thing happens all the time, saying no to men when you're on a night out is a risky business.

I'm not sure why this is not recognised more in the mainstream media, there have been enough campaigns news stories etc regularly over the years, it's not like this is unusual.

I really wish there was something we could do because the fact that some men react with agggression /violence to women saying no means we tend to treat men who approach us with a sort of defuse approach.

I used to be rubbish at that and get annoyed and just say fuck off, after a couple of goes at getting them to leave more politely. Lots of men dont like that and they do get v aggressive. It's shit tbh.

I hope the police do get interested, it's assault and not legal or OK.

It would be great if there were more often consequences for this sort of thing and fights that men start with men as well.

Erythronium · 17/07/2019 00:10

"Girls feel like they can't say 'no'." "They feel like if they say 'no' then they might hurt you and in this case it was true.

Poor girl. It's lose, lose either way. The men mean them harm and they'll do whatever they want to them.

They dont.

BillytheMountain · 17/07/2019 10:24

It is good it's in the press, shocked that no police are involved though. It's a huge signal that it's okay for all other violent aggressors to carry on, business as usual.
I remember being careful about rebuffing some more aggressive blokes and exiting the situation sharpish, but this is horrific.

Feels like we need a national programme of woman's self defence, in school PE lessons or local centres, esp if police can't be arsed.

Reading news websites/papers these days it's like a litany of violence against woman.

It's a relief to get older and be out of the firing line of male interest but is it getting worse or more reporting?
Either way, we need to do something to protect ourselves and our little sisters.
