Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Netball is a gender-affected sport. Any others?

Reading the trans inclusion policy for England Netball and transwomen are welcome to train and play in friendly matches but not to compete in domestic competition unless they have had a gonadectomy or taken hormones and have t in a required range.

Why don't all sports do this?

PS: Men invented the bounce-pass and the dive-pass.

They did? I've just googled a bounce-pass and we were doing that at primary 30 years ago.. I couldn't get a hit for dive-pass.

In any case - I have no problem with mixed sex anything, as long as it's clear that's what it is. Where the problem is, is saying that it's women's netball, and then letting some males play.

I know that when I played, as a shorty, I was absolutely useless in any of the goal scoring positions - the taller girls could cover me so completely I couldn't do anything but pass to someone else (often with a bounce pass)

UrsulaPandress · 12/07/2019 12:29

I too have been googling about the bounce pass. How do we know that men invented. quietly outraged

terfsandwich · 12/07/2019 12:35

Did men "invent" the bounce pass, or did men simply change the rules of netball to include it.

Just like they are changing the definition of woman.

It seems to me that any person could "invent" throwing a ball to someone with a bounce.

Ah fair enough UrsulaPandress (love your username). Probably due to happen here (Oz) soon, unfortunately, we are getting closer to Canada everyday.

DanaPhoenix · 12/07/2019 12:55

Yeah I've bounced passed before. Tactic of a short player whose pass may be intercepted.

not to compete in domestic competition unless they have had a gonadectomy or taken hormones and have t in a required range.

I think it is utterly appalling to insist that someone has medically un-necessary surgery or drug treatment in order to access an activity or facility. Nobody has the right to negate another person's bodily integrity.

Fibbke · 12/07/2019 14:17

They aren't insisting. If players don't want to do that they can play in a mens team.

My understanding is that they're saying that male players can only play in a women's team if they have surgery or take drugs.

Of course male players don't have to do that. Of course male players can play in a men's team.

But certain male players don't want to play in a men's team, they want to play in a women's team - whether because they aren't good enough for the men's team or because they insist on having their personal beliefs validated at any cost to others.

UrsulaPandress · 12/07/2019 15:02

Well in that case they can fuck right off.

glitterfarts · 13/07/2019 15:12

ALL sport should be sex segregated unless playing in a mixed sex competition.

Males (Y chromosome holders) have many physiological advantages over females (XX chromosome holders).

Therefore, males (people with a Y chromosome) need to compete with males. Not with females. Females have no Y chromosomes.

Whatever their appearance, name, preferred pronoun, dress sense, hair length, choice of makeup or any other such arbitrary measure is.

Fencing has rules about T but I've not managed to get a straight answer about how you can ask someone to give you their T results..?

Fencing has rules about T

Pretorious and why fencing associations and allies are standing by a transgender champion:

Chris Mostert, chairperson of the Gauteng Fencing Association, said: “I don’t have a problem with transgender athletes. If women are going to lose against Pretorius, then they didn’t deserve to win.”
...
Thobekile Moyo of the Wits fencing team said she had a fair competition against Pretorius.

“Her only slight advantage is how tall she is, but every fencer has some sort of physical advantage.”

Alex Collings, a University Sports SA referee, said Pretorius had a deep understanding of the rules and technical nuances of the foil (one of the weapons categories), which is why she stood out – not because of her physical attributes.

I don't know where to start. This is more than one physical advantage when it's 'advantages' that favour one sex's physiology rather than another. If the young fencer doesn't realise that extra height and reach and (probably) faster reflex reactions and greater explosive force are relevant when facing an opponent with a different physiology then experience may well change her present opinion.

But - that referee's remark defies all explanation and understanding.

There's a form of feminism and fairness that protects all women and there's a form of feminism and fairness that strips sex-based protections from women - I have no confusion as to what is on display here.
