Just picked this up on Twitter.

Ironically from Mimmymum and our favourite cyclist.

From their tweets (I've not yet gone through the actual survey) it would seem that more women support Transwomen in toilets than the % of men favouring transmen in theirs.

As I say I've not looked in depth but I'm guessing a) not all respondents may have understood that TW are biological males and b) women are socialised to be nice.

Anyway MM not happy that "attitudes are hardening"

Pull.

I don't think the photos have loaded. But I'm being told I've used up my allowance for today???

The stats seem to be 72% of women vs 64% of men.

Again part of the problem is that many people think "transgender women" are biological females who identify as men.

Chickenish · 11/07/2019 18:58

And people think I’m mean putting up stickers explaining it to them. I wonder why?

Now this is fascinating to me in the context of GLAAD's recently released, much-publicized survey of attitudes toward LGBTQ+ et al. in the US.

Headline: The young are regarded as the most tolerant generation. That's why results of this LGBTQ survey are 'alarming'
www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/06/24/lgbtq-acceptance-millennials-decline-glaad-survey/1503758001/

Of course the survey did not break down the data between the various letters of the alphabet soup.

Would be very, very curious to know what the figures are for each individual letter in that group. GLAAD, of course, has responded by "doubling down" their efforts to "educate" the populace; No visible element of introspection about these numbers...

In that same BSA survey if it's the one I'm thinking of) well over a third of people interviewed also thought a trans person shouldn't be a teacher or a police officer. Which rather points to them thinking gender dysphoria is a psychological condition that they should be "kind" about but they have concerns about their suitability for certain roles.

MockerstheFeManist · 11/07/2019 21:23

Asking people, "Are you prejudiced about x?" is such a mind-numbingly stupid question.

  • 'Of course I'm not prejudiced. My opinions are entirely reasonable. It's the people I disagree with who are the bigots," etc.

This is the link to the relevant chapter of the report

bsa.natcen.ac.uk/media/39289/5_bsa36_relationships_and_gender_identity.pdf

from the conclusion
the Gender Recognition Act consultation contains proposals that are grounded in a more liberal view of transgender people than that of the general public who, despite being very keen not to be seen as personally prejudiced, are less clear that prejudice against transgender people is on principle wrong

Where ‘prejudice’ is defined as wanting single sex spaces and privacy, and being able to state biological facts.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 12/07/2019 06:46

Indeed. The pesky general public aren’t quite convinced, but dontbfeel able to speak freely.

The Guardian (of course) published an article on this yesterday, framing it as a worrying lack of tolerance. Radio 4, on PM, said that the numbers were insignificant, especially when seen against the overall trend.

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 18:54

I got this wrong. Well over a third of people thought a trans person definitely should be given the job of primary school teacher or police officer if they had the right qualifications. The others did not.
