Article by Stoppard in the Mirror quoting the chairwoman of the child and adolescent faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Dr Bernadka Dubicka talking about the lack of research and the need for holistic, not affirmative, assessments of children:

Excellent article from Stoppard.

There needs to be so much more support for the mental health of teenagers.

The whole thing is a terrifying mess

Needmoresleep · 09/07/2019 09:00

Good clear article.

Where are the National Autistic Society in all of this. Surely they should be there arguing for proper screening for comorbidities.

ChattyLion · 09/07/2019 09:02

Agree about teenage MH support being not nearly funded enough. Very good article with only one comment BTL. Which is not calling anyone a transphobe.

frazzled1 · 09/07/2019 09:02

The NHS has a duty to patients for setting protocols, gathering evidence and monitoring compliance, a duty that should extend to gender dysphoria.

This.

Bending over backwards to please mermaids.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 09/07/2019 09:03

There will be a lot of young people with worries about their identity but those concerns might not need specialist treatment

Quote from the chairwoman of the child and adolescent faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Dr Bernadka Dubicka

Sounds very sensible to me

Me too.

Great article. You do wonder why this didn’t appear elsewhere though.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/07/2019 10:14

Where are the National Autistic Society in all of this.

Turning a blind eye and being absolutely fucking useless, as usual. They really don’t do much for the autistic community other than produce leaflets and ads. I’ve rung for help and what I got was... less than helpful.

FannyCann · 10/07/2019 08:14

Surely it’s not right to leave GIDS to treat children with such far-reaching consequences without supervision.

I think this is exactly what has been happening while the rest of the medical profession and the public were completely unaware. Now that we have sensible discussion coming from the RCGP and people like Carl Heneghan at the centre of Evidence Based Medicine people are waking up and hopefully the brakes are slamming on.

arranbubonicplague · 10/07/2019 08:22

Carl Heneghan at the centre of Evidence Based Medicine people are waking up and hopefully the brakes are slamming on.

Carl Heneghan is a very thoughtful and courageous researcher - he demonstrated alongside the ME people at NICE's 20th anniversary conference to protest some NICE guidance on the topic. He's an admirable leader who has excellent listening skills.

FormerMediocreMale · 10/07/2019 08:56

Great article and a lot of common sense.

Lumene · 10/07/2019 11:15

Good for Dr Miriam.

FormerMediocreMale · 10/07/2019 11:23

It's good to see this getting highlighted by more msm as it will reach more of the general public.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/07/2019 11:58

An excellent article. Meanwhile the Secretary of State for Education still funds adult lobby groups that access schools and gaslight children, still supports groups rolling back safeguarding and still enables groups that tell schools that they can ignore parents and transition children in secret - offering 'mentoring' and glitter families to replace parents.

Given that countless people have alerted him and so many other politicians to this, is it too much to hope that the buck will stop with him when these children reach adulthood and finally comprehend what has happened to them before they were of an age to consent?

OldCrone · 10/07/2019 12:13

Surely it’s not right to leave GIDS to treat children with such far-reaching consequences without supervision.

There seems to be something really odd going on at GIDS. This is a recently published article about their 'Early Intervention Study'.
gids.nhs.uk/our-early-intervention-study

They haven't published any proper results from this study which started in 2010.

This is a study of under-16s on hormone blockers, yet FOI requests about the number of children to whom these drugs have been prescribed indicate that they don't actually know how many children are currently taking them, or when any of them started taking them. How can they carry out scientific research on something for which they are not collecting any data?

NAS are embracing gender stereotyping. Sad

I contacted them for advice when my ds began the diagnosis process. I happened to mention that he had long hair and non-gender-conforming clothing and was fed up of his peers asking him if he thought he was a girl. Next thing I know they've sent me an invitation to a talk by a transman who is apparently an expert in gender identity in autistic people. Hmm
