I didn't think I'd find myself tearing up over the plight of a multi millionaire but the injustice of this has made me feel so sad and also angry for her. The man who bullied her for years now owns all of her work. Good on her for going public with how she has been treated by her previous record company too.

All record companies do this. You need a very good lawyer to go through the small print. It is a cut throat industry and this has happened to loads of artists.
She signed a contract at 15 with no legal advice.
Universal are just as bad as all the others. Hopefully she got good legal advice when she signed with them.
I do feel sorry for her.

AngeloMysterioso · 02/07/2019 20:16

She has been disgustingly screwed over here.

MrsDumpty · 02/07/2019 20:22

Ffs. No, she hasn't.

How do you think Michael Jackson ended up owning the Beatles masters? Was that sexism too?

This is completely standard for the music industry regardless of sex - whether it's fair or not is a different question.

Also, it seems Taylor has not been entirely truthful as a) her dad is a shareholder in Big Machine (the former record label) and b) she was given a chance to buy back the masters but she didn't like the terms of the deal. That's business.

LassOfFyvie · 02/07/2019 20:24

Well I'm not tearing up. So far as only being 15 when she signed up- her father was and is still around. She could have got proper legal advice then.

Her music is uninspired and bland - she's still made millions out of it.

GlitchStitch · 02/07/2019 20:25

It's the following statement that got me-

'He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn't want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.'

I think many of us have had men in our lives like that, where the idea of being forcibly linked to them is a nightmare. This is the man who promoted a music video where TS's head was stuck on a naked body like some kind of revenge porn and mocked her upset of it online along with Kanye and Bieber. It's just depressing that even women as successful as TS can't escape abusive men.

One of the worst I can think of was Don Arden's (Sharon Osbourne's father) ripping off The Small Faces. Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane (both of whom were more talented than Taylor Swift by a million miles) both died almost broke. Lane had multiple sclerosisand was supported by charity projects and financial contributions from friends, former bandmates and fans at the end.

GlitchStitch · 02/07/2019 20:29

I don't care how bland her music is. That a man who bullied and harassed her can now own it makes me angry. And the terms given for her owning her own music was to remain with them and earn it back a little at a time, for every new album she released. The fact that she left to a new record company for the sole reason of owning her own music suggests that she wasn't given the opportunity to buy it back, which is her position.

If you can find me evidence where MJ was instrumental in Paul McCartney's head being super imposed on a naked body against his wishes in a music video I'll agree there is no sexism involved.

a) Her Dad did not attend the meeting where this deal was discussed as he would have been required to sign a NDA and he didn’t want to have to keep secrets from his own daughter.

b) she was given the chance to “earn” back the rights to her masters by signing on with the label for another decade. They were going to sell up to SB anyway so if she had agreed she would now have to work for him for the next 10 years.

It speaks volumes to me that before Taylor even wrote about this SB posted this picture on his Instagram. Talking about buying her, like she’s a fucking chattel.

She'd already accepted that she would have to say goodbye to her back catalogue up to now. It's the fact that the man who has bought it is somebody who has taken part in pretty abusive behaviour towards her and appears to be revelling in his new found 'ownership' of her that sickens me.

I agree Glitch, this made me feel uncomfortable too.

GlitchStitch · 02/07/2019 21:02

Reminds me of what Kesha went through. I think SB wanted to be in charge of TS, but he's having to settle for owning her music not her.

@GlitchStitch my thoughts exactly.

He isn’t celebrating buying the label, or the chance to work with the other artists signed to it, or even his ownership of her work.

He’s bragging about buying Taylor Swift, the whole woman, like some object.

Scott Borchetta who used to own the label tried to tie her in for another 10 years, earning back her masters album for album. That is a shit deal. When she didn’t take it, he sold the company to another man who has had a great time making her life shit in a petty revenge power play.

Let’s not forget, this is also the guy who made Justin Bieber work through a mental health breakdown. Who made Ariana Grande work through PTSD. Who made Demi Lovato work through drug addiction. One of the nastiest, most rapacious, self-serving men in that entire toxic industry.

megletthesecond · 02/07/2019 21:13

I agree. I think she's been stitched up.

endofthelinefinally · 02/07/2019 21:32

This is why lawyers in the music industry are so rich.
It is a minefield.
But they really are all as bad as each other.
