Popchyk · 28/06/2019 22:52

Oh BBC.

At it again.

A health campaign for people with vaginas.

This is for anyone with a vagina.

"One in four people don't go to their smear tests".

That's where you might mention that, statistically, two in four people DON'T HAVE A FUCKING CERVIX YOU CLOWNS.

*throughout

RoyalCorgi · 29/06/2019 13:56

That guy called Ross who is advocating the use of "front hole" for "vagina". I would love to ask him if he's genuinely so fucking thick that he doesn't understand why the term "front hole" is so offensive".

(In my imaginary social media conversations with these people, my questions frequently begin with: "Are you genuinely so fucking thick that..." But I don't want to get banned.)

Fairylea · 29/06/2019 13:59

I just read that article on the bbc website and came here to see if there was a thread! I am Shock

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 29/06/2019 14:10

The BBC can fuck right off, and take the Guardian with them
Yep.

The list of things neither understands seems to grow by the day.

And my understanding of female anatomy is there are three holes, and the vagina is the middle one, not the front.

So Ross can fuck off too. Objectifying AND inaccurate.

DCIRozHuntley · 29/06/2019 14:18

I didn't even know I had a cervix until I was about 20. I was training to be a nurse. 11 GCSEs at A and A* but it hadn't been mentioned, or mentioned in a way that resonated, before then.

I can totally see how women with English as a second language or those who are poorly educated might genuinely not know the names for different parts of their anatomy.

"Women" or at a push "adult females / females over 25" should suffice.

Deliriumoftheendless · 29/06/2019 15:47

Front hole 🙄

My face hole is open at that arse hole comment.

Jellylegsni · 29/06/2019 17:00

I just saw this on my twitter feed. Isn't it incorrect (as well as dehumanising)? My 4 year old DD has a vagina but no need for a smear test I'm pretty sure.

Also they are happy to use the term "actress" to refer to the woman in the video, despite many female actors really disliking the word.

AlwaysComingHome · 29/06/2019 19:05

I’m pretty sure you can buy a vagina over the counter in specialist shops. Maybe they should come with an certificate that you have to get renewed every year, like a mott MOT.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 29/06/2019 19:46

I fucking hate the bbc.

AlwaysComingHome · 29/06/2019 20:01

Maybe we should write a follow-up the Mitch Benn’s ‘I’m Proud of the BBC’ called ‘I’m Ashamed of the BBC’ listing the corporations failings.

Jimmy Savile, Rolf Harris,
News programmes that take the piss...

I’m ashamed of the BBC
It doesn’t speak for you or me
Sexism and misogyny
It’s not even fucking free

AlwaysComingHome · 29/06/2019 20:02

Incidentally, Rolf Harris is mentioned in the original...

JustAnotherWoman · 29/06/2019 20:49

Yabbers you asked about the impact of using confusing language for cancer mssages,

Cancer Research talk about the importance of simple language here

www.cancerresearchuk.org/funding-for-researchers/patient-involvement-toolkit-for-researchers/planning-your-patient-involvement/writing-for-a-lay-audience?_ga=2.154463416.1468577395.1561837251-1398762266.1516570234

They also did a study that found the language that was being used was difficult for non native English speakers but I can't find that right now Confused

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/06/2019 21:48

I wouldn’t have such a massive problem in this brave new world of ours if it was people for everything

I mean I’d still think it was fucking stupid...but id think, ok

I am infuriated by this sort of shit...beyond angry

Goosefoot · 29/06/2019 22:37

Do they really want anyone with a cervix to get a smear test? Here they don't recommend it for those who have ever been sexually active.

Goosefoot · 29/06/2019 22:38

Never, obviously.

Popchyk · 29/06/2019 23:39

The Janice Turner thread mentioned previously got interesting.

twitter.com/DAaronovitch/status/1144963205921476608

David Aaronovitch, Times journalist:

"The word TERF is a term of abuse, Tim. I’d think long and hard about the position of a man using it. But look, you’ve revealed yourself by using it. I think we’re done"

So David Aaronovitch takes some bearded wokebro dude to task for using the term TERF (and other general bellendery) and then a female Labour MP, Johann Lamont, joins in.

"Terf is - and is deliberately used as - an offensive term. This feminist objects if that is allowed".

Johann Lamont is a member of the Scottish Parliament. For Labour.

OP posts:
AnyOldPrion · 30/06/2019 02:57

Didn’t David Aaronovitch have a blue tick earlier? Did I imagine it?

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/06/2019 06:00

I hate the lie that it’s it be inclusive of non binary and TM. It’s really to separate female biology from women.

Definitely this. Totally. Otherwise it would be triggering to transwomen to use “men”. They know anatomically they’re men. The overlap with TRA and MRA is huge, the hate of women incontrovertible. Putting women’s physical and mental health at risk irrelevant.

FamilyOfAliens · 30/06/2019 09:47

I’ve sent in a complaint to the BBC about the language in this article, as I had a spare five minutes yesterday morning.

If I get another spare five minutes today, I might write the reply to myself.

nauticant · 30/06/2019 13:08

I must add that I heard this on Radio 2 and 4 news this morning and the term Women was used thoughtour both reports. I wonder why the internet report isn’t the same?

Apparently 2% of BBC staff are transgender. I'd expect a disproportionate amount of those to be in IT roles.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/06/2019 13:11

Is woman going to be referred as the w word soon? It seems things are going that way.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/06/2019 13:11

referred to

aliensprig · 30/06/2019 13:31

I'd be interested to know why the guardian is considered to be bad for feminism compared to, say, the Daily Mail. Hmm

KitchenDancefloor · 30/06/2019 13:53

Sorry, not meaning to derail but @nauticant in reference to 'I'd expect a disproportionate amount of those to be in IT roles' I'd like to know more.

Is there a link to a MN thread discussing this or any stats?

All of my MTF trans acquaintances are in IT. I didn't realise this was a trend as it's quite a small pool of four.

Thanks.

Ereshkigal · 30/06/2019 13:54

Anecdotally it is definitely a thing. I don't think there is necessarily any research.
