J k Rowling has started to follow Magdalen on twitter which is getting the predictable pushback from some tras.

It’s all so very controlling isn’t it?

Juells · 24/06/2019 11:00

What does she say?

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 24/06/2019 11:11

Very telling that the people on that thread keep asking if she's not just "having a middle aged moment". The ageism and sexism of TRAs is so blatant.

nauticant · 24/06/2019 11:16

I'm not sure about that. Some time back Rowling was accused of transphobia for liking a tweet (I think it was that) and to get herself out of that difficulty she herself said something along the lines of making a mistake because she'd been having had a middle-aged moment.

EweSurname · 24/06/2019 11:38

Lionel Shriver said MeToo had gone too far and that if a woman didn't like a man placing his hand on her knee she should say something at the time. It was a particular incident she was talking about (I'm not sure which one). I was listening to it in the background so might have missed nuances.

Ah fair enough nauticant

nauticant · 24/06/2019 11:56

No worries ByGrab. If I think someone might be missing a bit of background I like to fill it in because it's good to argue from solid facts.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 24/06/2019 12:38

Definitely, I have no interest in strawmanning anyone!

Mermoose · 24/06/2019 14:35

EweSurname thanks for linking to that interview of Lionel Shriver. Like you, I didn't agree with everything she said but she made some really interesting points. I love the part at the end, from 57.45, where she says "If we're going to be a little more generous..." and then talks about what might be motivating people to carry out witch hunts. It's very sympathetic, it surprised me. I think she's right.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 24/06/2019 16:39

I liked the one where anyone who follows glinner is 100% transphobic. It's almost as if these silly children haven't even heard of Father Ted.
I had the theme from father Ted (beautiful songs called love, Divine Comedy) as the music for my first wedding dance. Honestly I was fated to be a witch.

I liked this ott dramatic comment. They really don't like people who don't tow the line.

I suspect they have almost zero power over jk now. Scream into the void pink hairs

That poster describes Glinner, Julie B and Magadalen as "spewing vitriolic hatred 24/7". It's utterly bizarre: do they really believe what they're saying? If so, their bar for what constitues hatred has been set extremely low

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2019 17:54

It’s not Mumsnet that radicalises women into terves, it’s transactivism.

Amen. Terfisaslur, followed by a lot of determined reading of TRA articles and materials trying to understand what the actual heck was going on, galloped me up a peak at high speed. Much of the 'radicalisation' here is sharing the articles, the tweets, the posts, the news events - just sharing the information produced by transactivism.

LOL at Magdalen 'spewing vitriolic hatred' - oh the drama and the total divorcement from any grip on reality. That calm, chilled out, common sense woman just quietly answering point by point, is about as hateful as a scone and jam.

ZebrasAreBras · 24/06/2019 18:07

I've just waded through a small section of her timeline. They also accuse her of being an anti-semite.

Honestly, twitter is a cesspit of weirdos, they all find each other there - the furries, the anime lovers, the MAPs, the zoophiles....and none of them pass up the chance to call a famous woman a bigot and a TERF. They love abusing women who refuse to kowtow to them.

JK Rowling is a real heroine of mine. I love all her books, I love everything she does. I am v aligned with her politically (left leaning, anti-brexit, critical of Corbyn) - she's a real role model in my view. It's awful to see her twitter crammed full of anime avatars with 6 followers abusing her.

J K Rowling’s only gone and followed Fionne Orlander Grin

littlbrowndog · 24/06/2019 19:58

FIONNE. just that

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/06/2019 20:04

what just now, as a statement? good on that woman

EweSurname · 24/06/2019 20:20

As far as I can make out, this is a very recent follow!

FloralBunting · 24/06/2019 20:23

Really, just now, in response to all this?

Do you know what, I've long said we all fight the fight in our own way. If JK has decided that she's going to stay well back and dangle enough carrots for the AWAs to lose their shit and hoist themselves on their own petard, then I think it's a supremely subtle and classy strategy. If she really is playing a long game and keeping her powder dry, then I shall be fearful impressed.

AlwaysComingHome · 24/06/2019 20:35

I really wish Twitter would die. The only reason for having an account is that other people do too, so a writer or a celebrity needs to have a presence otherwise they’ll lose out to other writers or celebrities. Take away the misogyny and racism and paedophilia and it’s still a shitty medium in which even the brightest people are reduced to soundbites.

ZebrasAreBras · 24/06/2019 20:47

Love Fionne.

I love this idea. Following Fionne is a masterstroke!

To those who are confused, seeing JK Rowling taken apart for the appalling heresy of following some people on Twitter might be quite the eye opener.

I must admit to going into full eyeroll mode yesterday when I saw there was a whole article in Medium based on just that. Just how paranoid and looking for offence do you have to be to trawl through someone’s follow list and then write an article about it?

Grin
EweSurname · 25/06/2019 08:57

I think you might be onto something floral because look who she’s following now Grin

JK for your work trolling the bullies, I salute you ✊

FloralBunting · 25/06/2019 09:05

Oooh. Bloody genius if she really is playing it that way. So many women who have been ripped apart for the smallest perceived transgression, and as we've said a number of times, all that's needed is to show everyone the AWA/TRAs own thinking and logic.
You can't get much more obviously barking mad than witch hunting someone for not saying a word, but following people on Twitter...

Fuck me, if the height of the oppression faced by homosexual and trans people is a famous author following some people they disapprove on on Twitter, then I'd say the battle for equality is won, no?
