Stickering

I bought some of those Woman = AHF stickers and put some around in places that I see other campaign groups have already stickered (lamp posts etc).

At first I felt silly because I didn't think the general population has any clue what the stickers mean.

However, I noticed today that each and every one has been angrily scratched off, leaving residue and backing paper.

So, it seems I have indeed "rattled" someone.

Today my partner tells me that it's illegal to stick things on street furniture and I could end up getting fined. I honestly never thought of that because there are little stickers all over town relating to various different campaigns or pressure groups.

I know there are lawyers on here. What could I be fined if I am caught? Are there specific structures that it's safer to sticker than others or is it all illegal and I should stop?

Why are feminists selling stickers if it is illegal to post them anywhere?

Apololgies for my newbie ignorance.

I suppose, if someone wanted to be pedantic, you could be arrested for causing criminal damage.

But, ahh, Sarah - they'll have to catch you first! 😉

SarahPickles · 23/06/2019 22:15

With all the CCTV around, I could be "caught on camera". How much interest would the CCTV operators take in me? Would the police be interested at all? I want to defend women but not get into trouble.

I put my stickers on my property - phone case, note book, laptop, wallet. All things which are regularly seen by others.

Obviously I'd never stick them on the back of public loo doors or on loo roll dispensers. I'd also never ever stick them up in changing rooms or inside locker doors, or on the cover of free magazines in waiting rooms, or on the back of seats on trains because that's all illegal and very very bad.

Flyposting laws, in reality I think the chances of you being caught are so small it's not worth worrying about too much.

FloralBunting · 23/06/2019 22:44

Yes, I would totally never stick them on places where they could be seen in the same place as, say, band stickers, or other advertising.

You can be as timid or as bold as you want, OP. You could have them as personal conversation starters on your own property, or you could be really subversive and stick them everywhere. It's entirely your call.

Tell you what, though, there's nothing quite so fun as checking out where the CCTV is, slapping a sticker on a telephone box and flashing the Vs at the camera as you leave.

Nightowlreturns · 23/06/2019 22:48

Where can I buy some stickers? Purely for putting on my own personal property, of course!

Nightowlreturns · 23/06/2019 22:49

I got some leaflets a while ago from FPFW but they don’t seem to have stickers?

glenthebattleostrich · 23/06/2019 22:55

Standing for women has the stickers

barelove · 23/06/2019 23:03

And I absolutely never stick them on the handles of supermarket trolleys.

TheInebriati · 23/06/2019 23:04

It could be counted as fly posting and the fine is about £80 per sticker. If you are worried about getting caught then leave a printed leaflet instead.

DpWm · 23/06/2019 23:13

Yes I think technically it's a crime to put stickers on public property.
I don't think that's why your stickers were scratched off though.
Try some other sticky tactics.

FloralBunting · 23/06/2019 23:15

Ha! Yes, I wouldn't have come to the conclusion that someone is going round angrily scratching out AHF stickers because they are really, really cross about things on lampposts.

Bill Stickers is innocent!!

barelove · 23/06/2019 23:20

If you are worried about getting caught....

I know If I were to ever go about doing subversive criminal acts like stickering, I'd be wanting to wear a good face concealing hoody to avoid being recognised on cctv. Something like this might work Wink

Is there anything against leaving printed leaflets around without permission? Asking for a friend....

TheInebriati · 23/06/2019 23:30

It could be treated as littering so make sure they don't randomly end up on the ground.

FloralBunting · 23/06/2019 23:39

Leaflets are probably best left in Libraries or GP surgeries.

I'm not encouraging stickering, you understand, pernicious habit that it is. But it does have the advantage of keeping information at eye level and stopping it fluttering the ground and causing litter problems.

S1naidSucks · 23/06/2019 23:40

Obviously I’d never recommend the following method for making it more difficult to peel them off, because that would be vandalism.

FloralBunting · 23/06/2019 23:49

Fair warning, though, decoupaging stickers onto lamp posts will probably take some time and the rozzers might catch up with you if you do that...

barelove · 23/06/2019 23:50

www.ehow.com/how_10066036_make-stickers-stick-plastic-permanently.html

.....Sorry officer, I'm just waiting for my decoupage glue to dry so that I can give the finish a light sanding and then leg it Grin

cwg1 · 23/06/2019 23:53

When I were a little lass, there were still a few posters about proclaiming 'Bill Stickers Will Be Prosecuted', to which it was popular to add 'Bill Stickers Is Innocent' Grin These days, I think the response would be 'I don't identify as Bill Stickers'.

cwg1 · 23/06/2019 23:58

Oops - xpost.

S1naidSucks · 24/06/2019 00:00

'I don't identify as Bill Stickers 😁

Would it not be, ‘I identify as Milly Stickers’.

RosaWaiting · 24/06/2019 00:48

I’m not brave enough to do this but if any police see you, fingers crossed they’re like this

AnotherLass · 24/06/2019 00:49

No offense, but I don't think that there is any point to this slogan. Indeed, I think that it is likely to be harmful.

What people need to know is what THEY'RE saying. Stickers need to say "trans activists say that sex is all in the mind and the penises can be female and if you disagree you are committing a hate crime" or something.

Out of context "women = adult human female", or "women don't have penises", just seem mean, as why would you say something that everyone knows is true but some people find upsetting, unless to just be mean?

Ameanstreakamilewide · 24/06/2019 07:58

But, Another, you must agree that 'AHF' is a little more pithy!
