Cujo

Just watched Cujo for the first time.

I never fancied this when it first came out because there was a glut of Stephen King adaptations and this one always looked like a bit of a Jaws knock-off, but I bought it on Blu-ray because I’m having a Stephen King season and Eureka generally do a good restoration job, plus the set is loaded with extras.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by it. It has a great female lead in Dee Wallace (Elliot’s mum in ET) who, for once, isn’t rescued by a man, but at the same time isn’t just a male substitute.

The kid is rather good too, and the sequences set in the car are genuinely harrowing.

I’m only really familiar with King’s early work but he does seem as interested in dysfunctional family dynamics (Carrie and The Shining for example) as much as horror for horror’s sake.

Horror has been dominated by Halloween rip-offs for so long it’s unusual to film that doesn’t focus on teenagers. I think there has been a revival of adult-focussed horror recently with films like A Quiet Place but they are still a minority.

As far as I recall it was just inspired by him and Tabitha staying in an empty hotel in Colorado and were the only two guests. I don’t think he was the caretaker!
You're probably right - it was something that I read years ago and my memory scrambled it.

Thank you, @GrumpyGran8!

I’ve just noticed the drop down menu that came when I mentioned GG8... how long has that been there? I like it!

I love Stephen King. Am a big fan of his son Joe Hill's work as well. The new adaptation of IT is pretty good. The one I wish they'd adapt is The Long Walk, though, and i'm surprised they haven't as it would be relatively cheap to make.

I'd like to see an adaption of King's novella Ur - it's in one of his story collections.
It was commissioned by Amazon to publicise their new Kindle (a teacher of English literature gets fed up with his students telling him about how marvelous kindles are, orders one to see what its like, and gets something unexpected). There's a bit of product placement, but it's a terrific thriller with a feel-good plot that reminds me of Shawshank Redemption. I don't know why Amazon haven't done it yet!

The new adaptation of IT is pretty good.

I loved it but I wonder if the sequel will lack the charm, dealing as it does with the adult version of the characters.
