Hospitals Charging for Miscarriage: D&C

This is absolutely disgusting - the fact that some hospitals see D&C post-miscarriage as a non-prority service that THEY ARE CHARGING WOMEN FOR: D&C privatisation

I'm absolutely disgusted that any women going through this would be charged for trying to ensure that she does not become infected post-miscarriage.

And that isn't even considering the fact that D&C is important for women suffering from PCOS and other conditions too.

This makes me unbelievably angry. Just trying to spread awareness before this becomes commonplace across other hospitals too!

After reading more into it, this isn't about privatising the NHS. It's about the following:

1- this isn't about denying patients their procedure or making NHS patients pay for their treatment. The NHS remains 'free at the point of care'.

2- the waiting list for all procedures/ operations are getting longer, with the government scrapping some targets as they were increasing ie embarrassing the government. Can u imagine waiting 12months for a knee replacement operation. I can see why some patients would pay for it trading the financial cost against poor mobility and pain.

3- NHS can offer procedures/ operations as private cases, thereby increasing the income generated by the Trust. The government has allowed this, and cut funding in real terms. Hospitals are struggling with increased demand with less resources, so you can hardly blame them for increasing income by offering procedures as private vs NHS.

It's a price list for those not entitled to nhs care. Not a new thing. Just spin.

I think the article is rather misleading. NHS commissioners have to follow NICE guidelines and these suggest that D&C is not an effective treatment:

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng88/chapter/Recommendations

There is also evidence that there is a risk that the procedure increases the evidence of preterm births in subsequent pregnancies eg

www.evidence.nhs.uk/search?ps=40&q=Dilatation+and+curettage

A nurse friend of mine had a D&C in the States following a miscarriage. She commented that she would not have expected this treatment in the UK.

Commissioners have to follow NICE guidelines and the process by which each guideline is developed is very extensive and transparent. They can respond to individual requests but the presumption is that guidance applies to the majority of clinical situations

They don't mean D&C after a miscarriage. They are talking about D&C for heavy menstrual bleeding, obviously helpful for some women, but not in the same boat as not receiving emergency/ urgent surgery.

They are procedures on a list deemed "low clinical value". The other operations on the list are not female specific, ear pinning etc.
Non-emergency surgeries that commissioners have deemed to not be cost effective. In my area they are also not available on NHS and patients would need to contact a private surgeon independently. This scheme means that there is a standardised pathway for seeking private surgery with a set cost.

In my area I think D&C for heavy menstrual bleeding is available still, but is restricted to patients who have tried x, y, z other treatments and meet other criteria. I agree that it would be better if NHS could provide more choice for patients, but it is a funding issue for whole NHS, not directed at women particularly.

It's outrageous! Fuck me, getting into debt because of a miscarriage?

I notice there is no charge for so called 'sex' change.

Got problems with your pregnancy failing - give us your credit card details.

Need some breasts you wonderful and very brave 'woman'? Have a seat.

I've had two D&C's in the UK following a miscarriage.

'Now been cancelled'

Like many operations?

That article showed extremely poor quality journalism. The first long quote is from some randomer on Facebook! Then there's a typo in the list so it says 'does not includes' - which is it?
It's also nothing to do with miscarriage, as PPs have pointed out.
