Can't do a link, but it's a cup company called ultucup. It's quite hilarious- women have been responding to their tweet about menstruators, and whoever is in charge of the company twitter account keeps laughing at them, posting gifs of Taylor Swift 'Haters gonna hate" lol laughing smiley. It's quite enjoyable to watch.

Plus, I don't want anyone else to call me a 'menstruator' either.

Would you say that to a trans man? 'Nobody is saying you have to call yourself a woman though'?

This whole 'be respectful of what people want' is very one sided isn't it?

LimeKiwi · 20/06/2019 22:30

I'm definitely not saying that, you're entitled to feel how you like - I'm just putting my opinion on.
Good to hear both sides and I'm all for debate and discussion

LimeKiwi · 20/06/2019 22:31

Sorry that was to helmet

LimeKiwi · 20/06/2019 22:44

If a trans man identifies as male though, and rejects the word woman as they don't see themselves as one, why would you (general you) say "nobody's saying you have to be a woman"
I mean, they'd be identifying as male. They see themselves as male.
If they want to call themselves menstruators they can crack on and do that in my opinion.
I definitely still identify as a woman, somebody calling themselves a menstruator and rejecting the word woman as they're not one can crack on doing so as it's up to them.
The word woman is still there and applicable to me who wants it.
That's what I think anyway

Eaudear · 20/06/2019 22:52

My point was that if a trans man was being misgendered and being called a 'woman', something they reject (as I reject 'menstruator') you wouldn't say to them, as you have said to me, 'what does it matter, no one is saying you have to call yourself a woman, you can continue to call yourself a man'. You would be berating everyone else for not respecting their feelings.

You're missing the point kiwilime. I don't want to walk down an aisle of products advertised to menstruators, or read news articles about menstruators, or be called a cervix haver by CRUK, or anything else that reduces me to walking body parts. It's insulting. Of course I'm not going to call myself a menstruator, and of course a transman is free to call themself a menstruator if they please. The issue isn't what we call ourselves in private, it's the labels put on us in public. If a product (or, increasingly, lots of products) target me using language I find dehumanising, that's a problem that will effect me in every day life. The same is true for transmen, they don't want to be targeted by products that refer to them as women. The problem is that we're the exact same consumer base, with mutually exclusive language preferences. How do we resolve that? Is it even possible? Certainly not by shouting "bigot" and posting memes about how we're all haterz.

LimeKiwi · 20/06/2019 23:13

See, I can see what you're saying there where it offends you as you don't accept menstruator which is fair enough.
I'm not sure how you'd (general you) resolve that.
As you say, is there any way? Whichever way round somebody's going to be upset so I'm not sure myself how that's easily resolved.
The way I see it and I appreciate not everyone feels this way, is that it includes people who are trans men as they're rejecting everything woman to be male, and it comes down to how you feel and view others - I reject menstruator, in my opinion no I'm bloody not I'm a woman, but if it makes their transition or life easier I'm all for that if they want to feel more included.
I do me.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 20/06/2019 23:50

I don't want transmen to be offended or excluded either personally, but I also don't want to live my life feeling demeaned and dehumanised and that's not a price I'm willing to pay for someone else's comfort. It's taken me a long time to love and be at peace with my body, and it'll take the next generation of girls even longer if they're referred to as nothing more than walking body parts everywhere they look. It's not just about me, it's also not the world I want my daughter growing up in.

Buck Angel is creating ranges of products for transmen which are otherwise packaged and marketed to women, such as lube. It's specifically for transmen both for sex but also vaginal dryness from taking T, and comes in masculine packaging. Thats a good solution to me.

  • Women get to keep their language and not be erased
  • Trans men get to choose their language and get products to suit their needs
  • Capitalism gets to rub it's greedy hands over a nice new gap in the market

Where the sex based right's of women are concerned, it's definitely a pie not a feast. Where capitalism is concerned, it's definitely a feast not a pie. We don't need to make every female product "inclusive", we can build a new industry catering to both groups.

But that'll never be acceptable because erasing and degrading women is the entire point, and being kind to transmen is just the figleaf badly covering it. If you don't believe me, check out Buck's twitter over the hate he's been receiving for making these products.

www.ultucup.com/

Front page a photo of a man and a woman who both identify as bleeding.

I'm assuming the man is a woman taking male hormones. Do periods continue while taking testosterone?

LimeKiwi · 21/06/2019 00:25

Just clicked on that link, can only see a page with a picture of what looks like a man and one more feminine looking .
I'm assuming the man is a woman taking male hormones too. Not sure whether periods continue whilst taking testosterone, hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will come along and be able to clarify and back up their findings Smile

calpop · 21/06/2019 00:34

How can menstruators replace women when women only menstruate for approx half their lives anyway. Not to mention elite female athletes, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, women with eating disorders, women with medical conditions, women on the pill, girls, and all the other women who arent actively having monthly periods. Not to mention the fact that we only menstruate for a few days a month so how can that define us in our entirety instead of women, a term which applies 24x7, from birth to death. Idiots.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 21/06/2019 00:37

Depends on the dose. It took my friend about 4 months to stop theirs and they had to up the dose a few times. But others might not transition at all.

GirlDownUnder · 21/06/2019 00:40

Lime is there a word missing in your first sentence?

Ok having looked at the website I'm actually going to revise my opinion. I hadn't realised it was a product marketed specifically to transmen, I thought it was a product marketed to women that had decided to call us all menstruaters as part of the great annual pride month virtue signal (like those period pants companies did). But if they're only addressing and targeting their product to people uncomfortable with the word woman and not expecting other women to adopt that label, then fair enough. If it's a product for transmen and they are happy with that term then fair enough. I still wish it wasn't that term they'd chosen though.

@ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving

Lol I think you should tweet this image to Ultucup or whatever this company is called. Hilarious.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 21/06/2019 02:24

I actually find 'menstruator' very triggering because it has the word 'men' in it which sounds like 'women'.

misscockerspaniel · 21/06/2019 08:39

Strange that condom makers are not marketing their product at ejaculators. I wonder why.
