Female Australian Football League player banned

I'm in Australia where transgender football player Hannah Mouncey has been embroiled in controversy over her desire to play professional Australian Rules football in the women's league. It seems she has now taken her remarkable sporting talents to the world of women's handball, where she is apparently doing well. So I was surprised to see this story on the news this evening..

A young female player stepped in to a male game and has now been given a 4 week ban from her own competition. Apparently she was not registered to play in the men's competition. Seems a swift and harsh reaction given that the last time an equivalent penalty was handed down in the men's league, it was to a player who deliberately knocked out his opponent cold!

I wonder if she'd be allowed to register and play if she was a male identifying trans person?

So basically every one hates women Angry

She was originally rubbed out for 6 weeks. Another tribunal then reduced it to 4 weeks. The issue was that she was not registered - which meant she is not covered by insurance. Absolutely none of the other players had an issue with her playing and were really appreciative of her playing so the game could go ahead - even though it was an automatic forfeit for fielding an unregistered player.

The competition requires every player to be registered (for insurance purposes), but women aren't allowed to register to play in the male competition effectively making it impossible for her to register so there is no way for her to comply with the rules and play.

I really can't unravel my feelings on this.

My initial reaction is that it feels very unfair that a woman playing with men was swiftly removed and punished on a technicality, while a huge fully grown man was able to be part of a team over a number of seasons with no issue at all, simply because he identifies as a woman ( and is now repeating the effort in the handball league).

It seems the men are a lot better than us at putting women swiftly back in their box.

I also think this woman rocks for getting out there with the guys!

Like I say. I'm confused. Confused

SO can she just self ID as a man on the days she plays football?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/06/2019 15:59

You can be unconfused quite quickly

Mouncey plays as the world is utterly fucking nuts

McElroy couldn't play because she wasn't insured.

Male players were delighted thst McElroy played, they got a game, even if the results were nullified

Female players are not so ecstatic about playing with Mouncey

The men could have said no and just not played that match

Women who say no never compete again - see the brave young American runner and her Title IX challenge.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/06/2019 15:59

SO can she just self ID as a man on the days she plays football? Probably, if she were registered and insured

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 16:08

So what kind of insurance does Mouncy have? Does it cover injuries to other players?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/06/2019 16:10

No idea. But Mouncey is registered and so, presumably coiveed by the sport's insurance. Yet another of those automatic organisational acceptances that go under the radar!

Would be an interesting, if painful, court case...

Good summary Curious. It's so revealing.

Woman, who poses no physical risk to other players, wants to play in men's game. Men in the team are happy for her to play. Authorities (via regulations) say no.

Man, who quite clearly poses a significant physical risk to other players, wants to play with women. Women not keen. Authorities, via (apparently very elastic where trans is involved, regulations) say fine!

It's just crazy.

I'm sure this young woman has no interest in trans politics and just wanted to play a game of football, but I do wonder what would happen if she did ID as a man. Would it make a difference?
