She has written an article about MPs and maternity and her battle with IPSA. (The expenses people)
I'm interested in what people think would be the ideal- seeing as it seems quite good now.
It seems to me that she gets quite a good deal- MPs who go on maternity leave continue to be paid full pay, no matter how long they take as maternity. So she could take 3 months, she could take a year- still on full pay. (She could take longer but she might lose when an election comes) She can vote by proxy for a year (I think) so in terms of parliamentary votes her constituents are still represented- the proxy votes how the MP on maternity tells them to.
Her staff carry on working. She seems to be arguing for more money her staff budget to cover her absence- which I kind of get- but not being in Parliament & not being in debates means they'll have less work anyway.
So how should it work? MPs going on maternity seem to have it quite easy in terms of finances... but I can't see how you improve the constituency work stuff. Do you have a stand in MP for surgeries & cutting ribbons? I genuinely dont know.
