Inappropriate BBC video? What It Takes To Look This Fabulous

I just saw this video, www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/stories-48583447/what-does-it-take-to-look-this-fabulous and I'm really appalled by it, I really don't think it's appropriate to be on the BBC website; I would be concerned about children seeing it and also as a woman I find it offensive. I'm going to make a complaint to the BBC but I'd like to hear your opinions too.

Presumably it is not just the boobs that are silicone in that outfit. Makes a change from rubber.

I think the days of using the BBC website as a resource for homework are probably drawing to a close.

FamilyOfAliens · 15/06/2019 08:03

Just watched the video - I’m not a big fan of drag myself but I couldn’t see anything offensive in the video.

What is it you are appalled by, OP?

Melioration · 15/06/2019 08:07

It wasn’t drag, it was ‘ballroom’. All about the dancing, apaz.

DpWm · 15/06/2019 08:18

"fabulous" ?? really?

Lumisade · 15/06/2019 08:19

I am appalled by the normalisation of sexual imagery. I wouldn't want a child to have to watch a woman dancing wearing as little as that and I'm not sure that the BBC would have a video of a woman doing similar? I don't think it's acceptable just because it's fake breasts etc.

Also, isn't just making a mockery of women?

MIdgebabe · 15/06/2019 08:20

HAve not looked at the video but dh and I just roared with laughter and the headline and accompanying image. Ugly, stupid, fake perhaps but fabulous? Each to their own I suppose.

Bespin · 15/06/2019 08:22

the person is Wearing something similar to cabaret style outfit that is comman in variety. eg tiller girls. they are dancing which lots of people do and having a fabulous time in a supportive environment what exactly is the issue?

Lumisade · 15/06/2019 08:25

Bespin, I wouldn't want my children to be watching and emulating that dancing. It shouldn't be on the main page on the BBC website. It's flipping lewd.

OP posts:
Bespin · 15/06/2019 08:27

you better stop them from watching all current pop stars then as its exactly the same style of dancing.

Lumisade · 15/06/2019 08:29

Bespin, aye, you may have a point there, maybe I'm just so old fashioned in my early 30s that I don't think it's acceptable.

It wasn’t drag, it was ‘ballroom’. All about the dancing, apaz.

The man interviewed describes it as drag.

I’m not saying your view about this isn’t reasonable, OP, and I think drag caricatures women. But it comes across to me as more pantomime dame than fabulous.

Bespin · 15/06/2019 08:30

it's ok I'm not down with the kids either lol

LolaSmiles · 15/06/2019 08:30

I also don't see the issue. It's someone dressing up and performing. Dance shows and competitions often are full of fake tan, costumes etc. It's more sexualised in places than I would do, but each to their own.

I don't think it's making a mockery of women, because most women don't share their foreheads black, cover themselves in gems, have neon yellow wigs etc. It's a show and a style of performance that isn't my cup of tea but I'm not convinced it's offensive.

Bespin · 15/06/2019 08:32

drag is a part of the inclusive ""ballroom" scene. look it up it will blow your mind lol

mabelmylove · 15/06/2019 08:33

Is it the dancing you’re opposed to? Really? Because the costume and dancing style is far more modest than a good percentage of current UK pop videos and performances. Seems to me like there’s something else here you ‘don’t want your children to see.’

straighttalker33 · 15/06/2019 08:35

I do wonder about people like you, complain about absolutely anything. You must give yourself a headache. You really need to lighten up.

MIdgebabe · 15/06/2019 08:35

I guess the difference between pop stars and the bbc is that the BBC is effectively the tv station that has an official role in education, and as something that resresents the uk to the world. So it is reasonable to aaply higher standard to the bbc which is in effect funded through taxes (hard to avoid, you must pay even if you never watch bbc)
So is it reasonable for the bbc to be saying “ this is what the uk thinks a fabulous woman looks like and acts like”

Bespin · 15/06/2019 08:37

I would suggest watching pose on whatever streaming service its on.

katmarie · 15/06/2019 08:38

I've seen skimpier outfits and more provocative dancing on strictly. I really don't see the problem with the video.

Echobelly · 15/06/2019 08:38

Yeah, it's just a performance - I get it that people have some concerns about trans related issues but we don't need to get our knickers in a twist about anything that involves gender nonconformism on that account, it's not a good look.

FamilyOfAliens · 15/06/2019 08:40

So is it reasonable for the bbc to be saying “ this is what the uk thinks a fabulous woman looks like and acts like”

Is that what they’re saying, though?

Lumisade · 15/06/2019 08:41

Fair enough if the guy wants to dress like that, I find it vulgar and insulting it doesn't affect me so whatever, but why does it have to be on the front page of the BBC website? I'd expect images like that from the Sun page 3 but not the BBC.

Bespin, I'm beginning to think I should move to an Amish community and live a luddite existence. Smile

OP posts:
MIdgebabe · 15/06/2019 08:45

I think the strictly outfits are often demeaning to people also. And I am not alone, I am pretty sure the bbc toned It down recently. I just wish children and adults could be fabulous based on something other that physical appearance.could be fabulous without spending lots of money ( and therefor harmful to the planet) and time on something that’s adds nothing to humanity. It’s a thing that affects women more than men

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/06/2019 08:46

Wow. Ballroom is not what I thought it was ...

MIdgebabe · 15/06/2019 08:48

The BBC’s represents the uk. It is part of it’s role. The headline says what does it take to look this fabulaous. It is saying the bbc and therefore the uk sees this as fabulous.
