"Homophobic and transphobic hate crimes surge in England and Wales"

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/14/homophobic-and-transphobic-hate-crimes-surge-in-england-and-wales

What you won't get from this, is that it is a rehash of figures from October 2018

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/748598/hate-crime-1718-hosb2018.pdf

As then noted 'In 2017/18, the police recorded 11,638 sexual orientation hate crimes (up 27%), 7,226 disability hate crimes (up 30%) and 1,651 transgender identity hate crimes (up 32%). These large percentage
increases across all three strands may suggest that increases are due to the improvements made by the police into their identification and recording of hate crime offences and more people coming
forward to report these crimes rather than a genuine increase.'

Also, while LGB hate crime is relatively common, T hate crime is the rarest form.

And this news follows the attack on two lesbians yet much of the article is devoted to transphobia. It is noted that hate crime increased 376% in W Yorkshire in 4 years.

I do think you have to be spectacularly thick to imagine the world is four times more hateful in four years, rather than this reflecting WYP priorities.

Obvs. the Guardian excludes disability from its narrative entirely.

Well it would.
The guardian is nothing more than a propaganda sheet now. It’s in financial difficulties, ignore it and it will quietly die,

nonsenceagain · 15/06/2019 07:09

That’s its ‘fuck you’ in response to criticism of its NSPCC coverage. I’m sure they see this as taking a noble stand in the face of transphobia. They will be very sorry about what they colluded in.

I find the bias in a lot of these media outlets that are sort of centre-left really disturbing.
The ones I think of immediately are The Guardian, the BBC, and in Canada the CBC. In the past I considered these very trustworthy, which is not to say I always agreed with their editorial slant, but I considered that they tried to be balanced, look for facts, and so on, and had journalistic professionalism and expertise. I no longer think this, and I believe its a change in them, not just that I now notice. I even find it difficult at times to listen to my local morning show which is supposed to be light, it seems to have such a myopic agenda.

TheAngryLlama · 15/06/2019 07:21

The guardian is Fox News for the Brighton/Islington axis of the Labour Party. It’s lost all right to be taken seriously.

Gone2far · 15/06/2019 07:23

nonsence totally true. The journalistic equivalent of sticking your tongue out and going 'na na na'. But then, it is the Guardian

TransposersArePosers · 15/06/2019 07:34

I was just reading a Dr Em Twitter thread linked via Posie's fb page and someone on there has put

'Another NSPCC Trustee is also chairman of Guardian Media Group, Neil Berkett, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for impartial reporting there, either.'

R0wantrees · 15/06/2019 08:17

Another NSPCC Trustee is also chairman of Guardian Media Group, Neil Berkett, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for impartial reporting there, either.'

The issue seems more that Berkett is not an impartialmember of NSPCC board.

The Guardian reporting of this has not been accurate to the NSPCC so far.

MB team was contacted & had influence in the first statement.
Munroe Bergdorf has been advised of the reasons why NSPCC had to discontinue work together (which is Safeguardin)

Guardian is giving free rein to Bergdorf & Owen Jones to construct & spread lies basically.

Im more concerned about Berkett's influence on board of NSPCC as it sure as heck isnt helping NSPCC get its message of Child Protection out there.

^^ THIS

I ask again why was he reappointed in Oct 2018 when he's already done 7 years as a trustee, the standard term is 3 years & the maximum period in total 9 years. I do not believe there are no other equally skilled candidates out there.

FreeFreesia · 15/06/2019 13:09

When I say reappointed it wasn't just tick the box, he actually left for a year.

Juells · 15/06/2019 13:34

I wonder how many of the WY hate crimes were for mean words on twitter?

Floisme · 15/06/2019 14:30

This was the leading story on the Guardian website for at least 12 hours. (I first saw it yesterday tea time and it was still the first article this morning.) If it was based on 8 month old figures then I find that quite extraordinary, given all the other events in the news this week.
