Jackson signing prompts ‘serious concerns’ from club sponsor Diageo www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/paddy-jackson-signing-prompts-serious-concerns-from-club-sponsor-diageo-1.3920656

What a shame.

The fact that so many people cannot understand that while technically legal (by virtue of the fact he was acquitted) his behaviour was completely unacceptable is infuriating!

Those same rugby fans were calling for Israel Folau’s head a few weeks ago, for posting bible verses deemed homophobic. The outcry over it in rugby circles just made me laugh, especially by people like James Haskell! What a nerve he has to moralise to anyone after his end of season boat trip. Rugby is all about supporting certain groups, but never women. I’ve had lots of debates with people about Sevu Reece playing and one awful guy kept using his victim as a defence, because she’s forgiven him. Rugby really has a serious misogyny problem.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 13/06/2019 19:27

Another sponsor to contact is Paddy Irish whiskey but I can’t find their contact details.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 13/06/2019 19:33

Just coming here to check that the good news had reached this far

The victim received such enormous support here and it was such a big part of these boards during the trial.
Glad to see some positive action

Well done diago Star

ChattyLion · 13/06/2019 19:40

Flowers to anyone affected by these issues
Please let this signify a raising of the bar for players and for the clubs, sponsors and fans’ expectations of their players’ behaviour off the pitch.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 13/06/2019 19:42

Btw
Those saying to contact guinness, Diageo own guinness

MrsFrTedCrilly · 13/06/2019 19:50

Delighted to see that Diageo has made such an unambiguous statement. Now for London Irish to see sense....Hmm

finnmcool · 13/06/2019 20:05

This has cheered me up to the maximum!
We can make a difference to the ingrained, societal 'norms' of rape culture and misogyny.

I made Zurich insurance shit themselves today, regarding their lack of safeguarding for women and girls 💪💪💪💪💪

We have to keep pushing on!

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 13/06/2019 21:04

And I think Irish' refusal to address this when they signed him was arrogant or naive or both.

Arrogant, I think.

Definitely not naive. They knew exactly what they were doing, but they didn't care, because it's only women and he's a good player.

TalkingOrmer · 13/06/2019 22:06

@finnmcool tell me more about Zurich? Do I need to move my pension?

NaomifromMilkshake · 13/06/2019 22:20

I think the refusal to address it is a huge factor.

I smell the hand of Declan Kidney (gobshite of this parishAngry ) this is the man who led Ireland to defeat after defeat and actually thought the IRFU were unreasonable to not renew his contract. Thank God for Joe Schmidt.

Paddy Jackson did not spend long enough in the rugby wilderness to have acquired even the smallest level of humility.

On paper his talent was a great signing, but when you put a face to the talent, he was seriously damaged goods.

Well done Diageo.

finnmcool · 13/06/2019 22:28

@TalkingOrmer Zurich insure GLL (Better Gym)

GLL haven't deemed it necessary to do a risk assessment regarding trans access to the female changing rooms.
Zurich helped write that particular policy.

I was waiting to hear back from them, but on the back of a thread I was on earlier, I called them early evening today.

Lots of bluff and bluster. I was repeatedly asked what my interest is. I said, "I'm a woman, that's my interest"
The relevant person is, apparently, going to contact me to clarify their lack of safeguarding and no risk assessment.

You can see the back and forth emails from and to GLL on the thread I started a few weeks ago...

Risk assessments regarding clothing shop changing rooms

If you need anymore information, please let me know.

finnmcool · 13/06/2019 22:31

@TalkingOrmer I know it's a different subject, but for me, it's under the safeguarding women and girls umbrella.

It's quite shocking how little the big companies think of women and girls.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 13/06/2019 22:42

I'll be writing to thank Diageo too.

Finn, that's a really interesting angle. I might do some googling over the weekend.

Diageo have withdrawn their sponsorship of London Irish.

Raises pint of Guinness!

Girl, we haven't forgotten you.

Jonette · 13/06/2019 22:58

They're going to be hard pressed to find a new sponsor. If Diageo have withdrawn, nobody will touch them with a barge-pole until they get rid of him. Prick like him.

GallopingGreen · 13/06/2019 23:30

So happy with this news. So impressed with Diageo to make a stand on this. They have gone up 100x in my estimation.

ForeverFaithless · 13/06/2019 23:30

This is good news, a step in the right direction, just need more sponsors to follow.

finnmcool · 13/06/2019 23:32

Motherforkin GLL and Zurich have used Stonewall's interpretation of trans.
So basically, any male who says he wants access to female spaces.
The policy allows self identifying males full access.

RonaldMcDonald · 14/06/2019 00:36

I feel this deal was set prior to his leaving Ulster - season in France for the feminazis to calm down and the London Irish. He’ll be back in an Ulster/Ireland shirt within an obscene timeframe
Diageo were a minor sponsor to London Irish and their loss wasn’t a great blow to them.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/06/2019 07:22

The associations between London Irish, Ulster and Paddy Jackson are too close for it not to have all been a done deal ages ago - I think your reading is spot on, Ronald. It makes me nauseous reading about the "old boys" nature of it all - Les Kiss and Declan Kidney rubbing their hands with glee. They couldn't give the tiniest shit about what a misogynistic prick (#suemepaddy) it is my honest belief that their new player is.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/06/2019 07:27

He’ll be back in an Ulster/Ireland shirt within an obscene timeframe

You think? That would be really bad.

The main sponsors are all construction types whose customers are other businesses.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/06/2019 10:53

This is the email response I got:

Many thanks for your email and for sharing your thoughts, we take all feedback on board and are grateful for you taking the time to write in.

We have met with London Irish this week to express our concerns. Their recent decision is not consistent with our values and so we have decided to end our sponsorship of the Club.

We have supported London Irish for 27 years and hope to be able to do so again in the future. However, respect, inclusivity and decency are core to the Guinness brand and we feel that the recent signing at London Irish is not reflective of these values and the type of associations we endeavour to uphold.

Yours Sincerely,
Cheryl Morris
Diageo Consumer Relations

JustAnotherWoman · 14/06/2019 11:29

It is so refreshing to see a large corporation like Diageo listen to customers and make a stand like this.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/06/2019 11:40

JustAnotherWoman

It really is, it’s not that common. I wrote to sponsors of NZ rugby about their policy of employing players who have domestic violence records. The major one wrote back to say they’re talking to NZR about it, but that’s all. The club he belongs to, Crusaders, and their sponsors, don’t give a shit. I cannot imagine a NZ sponsor ever dropping them because of something like this.

YogaDrone · 14/06/2019 11:47

I had emailed Diageo about this too and received broadly the same reply as Jessica upthread. I have replied thanking them.

Good for Diageo. I don't like Guinness on it's own but I'm not averse to a black velvet cocktail Grin (adds Guinness to shopping list)

On the point about the NZRFU - is it because the players are centrally contracted rather than directly by the Crusaders?
