BBC: why are black trans women being killed in Dallas

The BBC presenting a false narrative.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-48525458

The headline implies there is a serial killer targeting black transwomen in Dallas. In fact, the article says there is nothing to substantiate this.

Two black transwomen were killed in three weeks.

There were 41 homicides in Dallas in May alone. Around 80% of Dallas murder victims are black or Hispanic. 85% are male.

A month ago a serial killer in Dallas who is believed to have killed at least twelve women (all women) was identified. www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2019/05/15/serial-killer-suspect-now-charged-smothering-dozen-elderly-women-dallas-collin-counties

There is not one word about this mass murderer on the BBC.

A hypothetical 'three transwomen died in a big violent US city in a year' story, and it's front page news.

They say 55% of transwomen killed last year were in the South, reflecting bigotry, however statistics show 53% of black transwomen live in the South, and black people generally are much more likely to be murdered.

There is currently an active serial killer in Detroit who appears to have killed three prostitutes in similar fashion www.google.com/amp/s/www.mlive.com/news/2019/06/serial-killer-rapist-targeting-sex-workers-on-detroits-east-side-police-say.html%3foutputType=amp

Nothing on the BBC.

Computer analysis last week revealed 51 black prostitutes strangled in Chicago which may be linked by a serial killer. www.google.com/amp/s/www.fox32chicago.com/amp/news/local/serial-killer-in-chicago-51-women-murdered-by-strangulation-since-2001

Not on the BBC.

This follows the conviction of a serial killer in Gary, following similar analysis. This was also not covered by the BBC.

James Michael Weight, who last month admitted killing three young women in three weeks in February and March in Virginia, also not covered by the BBC.

Shawn Grate, who murdered and raped at least six women, and sentenced in 2018 and 2019, also not covered by the BBC.

The BBC also did not cover the fact that the most recent US murder statistics showed a 21% increase in female homicides.

Sorry, correction, according to the US Census Bureau, the South is in fact 16 states, comprising 58% of the transgender black population of the US, and 38% of the total population of the US.

Obviously without adjusting for different ethnic rates of murder and rates of being transgender, it is not possible to say whether there is a greater risk in the South

And, 8 of the 10 states with the highest murder rate in the US generally are in the South, and of the other two, one, Alaska, is practically empty

That's a great analysis, OP. Thank you.

RubberTreePlant · 06/06/2019 10:55

The BBC are almost as disappointing as The Guardian.

nauticant · 06/06/2019 11:08

In my view the BBC are worse. They receive money from the UK population and have a duty to be impartial. They have a guaranteed income stream and so should not be falling back on fear of losing audience as an excuse.

In fact, in this time of fake news and uncertainty, this could be a golden time for the BBC. People all around the world are looking for a place to get reliable news and the BBC are turning their back on that to favour their progressive liberal bias.

RubberTreePlant · 06/06/2019 11:11

True enough. When the state funded, PSB, news organisation drinks the koolaid, we're all rudderless.

OrchidInTheSun · 06/06/2019 11:24

I follow a group called Our Lives Matter on Facebook. They track acts of violence (chiefly murder) against black women and girls in the US.

They reported on 6 different murders yesterday alone.

And this: amsterdamnews.com/news/2019/jun/04/list-black-and-missing-continues-grow/#.XPdZeuX8gyY.facebook talks about the huge number of young black women who have disappeared and how Texas is a huge hub for trafficking black girls.

But the BBC isn't reporting that. The BBC has become a propaganda machine (and OP can you repost this on the thread called BBC bias?)

TimeLady · 06/06/2019 11:27

My DH, like many, sadly still believes the BBC is a beacon of truth; I've tried to explain that not reporting stories is a very successful passive-aggressive way of effectively skewing the news to suit their own agenda.

Goosefoot · 06/06/2019 15:05

I see the same thing here with the CBC.

I have wondered about the question of national broadcasters being non-partisan. While its always impossible to be without bias, even as an organisation, I think its right that national broadcasters need to have a broad viewpoint. So I wonder ow it is many of them have become associated with the left, or really with progressives. This isn't recent, its been going on a long time, 25 years ago when I was living at home with my parents it was that way. They may have a few more conservative hosts or guests, but that is not the editorial bias.

I find it difficult to disagree with conservatives who feel they aren't represented there.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 14/06/2019 13:44

Well the BBC have a follow up.

BBC News - Muhlaysia Booker: Man charged with murder of Dallas transgender woman
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-48619994

They fail to mention that the man was charged with three murders, the other two dead being a man and a woman. Apparently they are not important.

Despite the lack of a link to transphobia, etc., they still devote half the article to talking about it.

OP posts:
DpWm · 14/06/2019 14:09

If the murderer was a transwoman they'd be referred to as a woman throughout with no mention of a trans status.

Surely this is just another case of a woman being murdered, BBC? Right?

AlwaysComingHome · 14/06/2019 14:15

They fail to mention that the man was charged with three murders, the other two dead being a man and a woman. Apparently they are not important.

Which would make transphobia an unlikely motivation, unless he was also motivated by misogyny and misandry on the other two occasions.

Coyoacan · 14/06/2019 15:57

Interesting. Thanks. I have mistrusted the BBC for so many years, starting with the troubles in N. Ireland, where it's reporting inside the province was often subtly inflammatory.
