I wrote to the head of woman’s aid about Diana that sat on the equality's committee about their shameful tweet about trying to get a look at a sex shop on the trains And got this reply 😊
Thank you for your email. I appreciate your concern and I was surprised to read the content of the tweets you forwarded to us.
Firstly, to clarify our relationship to member organisations in the Women’s Aid Federation; all our members are independent charities and are responsible for the management of their own staff and volunteers. When we receive complaints about member organisations, our Complaints Policy, attached, refers complainants to the organisation’s own complaints procedure in the first instance. If the complainant is not satisfied with the outcome of the member’s complaints process, they can refer the matter to us and we will investigate whether the organization has breached its terms of membership of Women’s Aid Federation of England.
Secondly, I think there is some confusion about what Diana Jones means in her tweet because of the lack of punctuation. The website named in the tweet is described on Wikipedia as being the site for, ”a sex shop, founded and run by women for women”, displaying items for sale. I read the tweet as complaining that GWR, “sees this [the shop] as porn”, whereas Diana sees it as a commercial website. She then says to GWR, “shame on you, not on those women accessing it”.
However, regardless of Diana’s intended meaning, I would agree that the website content is not appropriate to be viewed on public transport and it was legitimate for the train company to block it. I also agree with you that the tweet has not enhanced respect for the business of this vitally important select committee for promoting women’s equality and that is a great shame.
If you would like to complain about the behavior of Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust’s volunteer, I can request Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust’s Complaints Policy for you and can support you through the process of complaining to them.
If you don’t wish to make a formal complaint yourself, I will still make Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust aware of the concerns you have expressed to us and I will review whether the behavior of the organization’s representative has breached any of our terms of membership. I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards
Janet McDermott
