This person writes books for doctor who and the 'fandom' has put pressure on BBC to remove him from a book of short stories due to his transphobic tweets.

What really interests me is the huge amount of support he has received rather than the usual twitter stream of misogynistic GIFs that women get.

Great decision by the BBC. This is a man who has written tweets mocking ‘trannies.’

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 04/06/2019 13:03

Those who want to silence and punish people for saying things that they don't approve of better watch out. You will be next.

EverardDigby · 04/06/2019 13:06

Yeah I winced when I saw it, but it did make a bit of difference when I read that he is part of the LGBT community, where words are used differently, I use dyke sometimes with lesbians, which in some situations could be deemed offensive. The tweet was badly judged, but I like his unequivocal statement that he doesn't believe that people can change sex nor are born in the wrong body.

FeministCat · 04/06/2019 13:09

This is a man who has written tweets mocking ‘trannies.’

What do you think the odds are that those who complained also have more than once used the word “truscum” to describe transsexuals, labeled lesbians as “genital fetishists”, and stated or condoned messages that “terfs” should DIAF?

I sure would not beg against it.

FeministCat · 04/06/2019 13:10

*bet, not beg

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/06/2019 13:13

This is a gay man who has pointed out that back in the 80s gay men, lesbians and trans people (as they weren't called then) used that word and also queer and dyke about themselves. 'Queer' is now perfectly respectable - it's the Q in LGBTQ+. (It's also become meaningless, as all it seems to mean is 'I'm not straight! Straight means dull and I'm special!' as opposed to the original meaning which was definitely 'same-sex attracted'.)

The t word has been cast into outer darkness, the d word seems to vary depending on who says it.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 04/06/2019 13:14

I've noticed that books and writers are a massive tra target. I suppose they are modelling the old book burning days - if you can censor the creatives, the thinkers and the writers then it is so much easier to silence the masses. The tra desire to oppress all others is overwhelming isn't it?

littlbrowndog · 04/06/2019 13:16

I’ve rejected restrictive cultural gender stereotypes for as long as I can remember. I consider them to be very often harmful and constricting, especially for girls and women. The culture I enjoy most and the artists I like most are people who laugh at, bend and play with these roles.
I don’t believe in gender identity. It is impossible for a person to change their biological sex. I don’t believe anybody is born in the wrong body.
I think it’s wrong to – write a falsehood into law; compel people by law to speak words they do not believe; rewrite the law to remove women’s biological sex-based rights and protections; reinforce gender stereotypes; medicalise children who don’t conform to gender stereotypes. That’s it.
I don’t believe my view should be protected either. People must be protected, ideas must never be. I would ask the writers who objected to my inclusion in the same book as them to reflect on that.

Above is what Gareth said

"Great decision by the BBC. This is a man who has written tweets mocking ‘trannies.’"

So, mockery and wrongthink no longer allowed. That will totally bugger-up (pun intended) most the gay men I know, and most of the drag queens.

But I'm not sure that the Dr Who and Sarah Jane fans are quite as woke as some would like to make out.

And let's just say, this WASN'T some amazingly high profile BBC lead presenter job thingie, this was contributing to a collection of stories in a fairly niche area. Although profit margins must be really tight if the threat of a boycott from TRAs could tip the balance.

AlwaysComingHome · 04/06/2019 13:47

This surprised me. I’m a Doctor Who fan but Doctor Who fandom went ‘woke’ in the Nineties, long before it went mainstream. The online community is almost unbearable and I avoid it like the plague. I’m surprised he’s lasted this long if he’s gender critical.

Roberts has written several Doctor Who books and four or five episodes of the new series, including the one with Shakespeare and the one with Agatha Christie. They both had several jokes that would have raised hackles had Roberts not been gay himself (I think there’s a ‘ginger beer’ comment in the Agatha Christie story). So gay, but not PC about it.

Goosefoot · 04/06/2019 13:48

It's shutting down writers, academics, comedians, actors, directors.

I think people are starting to notice, though.

SlipperyLizard · 04/06/2019 14:02

I recently bought a book of poetry by Stuart A Paterson purely because he was standing up for women’s rights on Twitter.

I don’t even particularly like poetry, it just felt like a small way to say thank you.

AlwaysComingHome · 04/06/2019 14:05

I recognise some of the names in the supporting tweets..used to be in the same local fan group as one.

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/06/2019 14:06

Seven Hex and Miranda Yardley had posts deleted on fb /suspended for writing 'tranny' many times. #transirony

NellieEllie · 04/06/2019 15:38

Just like to say, I knew Roberts through work in the late 80s/90s. He was defintely NOT transphobic, and back then, most people were. He always had a quirky self deprecating sense of humour, took the p*ss out of everyone, but was actually a very kind young man.

NellieEllie · 04/06/2019 15:40

I’ve tweeted support on here, but it mostly a pile on. mobile.twitter.com/0hMySt4rs/status/1135877851880800256

Orchidoptic · 04/06/2019 16:14

Which regimes have got rid educated free thinking creatives first before?

leghairdontcare · 04/06/2019 16:20

I can see now that he's getting a lot more abuse as the issue has gained more attention on twitter.

OP posts:
VickyEadie · 04/06/2019 16:23

Calling him "transphobic" for using a term that many transsexuals have used of themselves is ludicrous but par for the course these days with the TRAs, their supporters and the terminally woke brigade.

Coyoacan · 04/06/2019 16:26

It is total madness that we can only watch, listen or read someone that we agree with 100%, especially when their work has nothing to do with the issue we are offended by.

OvaHere · 04/06/2019 16:39

Ridiculous pile on.

I've read countless tweets about Dr Who fandom needing to be a safe space which really goes against the purpose of literature and fiction which is meant to stretch and challenge the mind.

All because he's a man who believes in sex based rights for women and homosexual people.

I can't do much about the Twitteratti but DS loves Dr Who so I've bought him one of Gareth's books in solidarity.

AlwaysComingHome · 04/06/2019 16:52

I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since the early Seventies. It wasn’t meant to be ‘safe’. It was something you watched behind the sofa.

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 16:54

Agree online Who fandom is a fucking woke nightmare. I used to frequent GallifreyBase and it's forebear and it's just got more and more unbearably twee as time has gone on and I never go there now.

Russell T Davies recently signed one of those virtue signally GwiththeT letters, and I tried to pretend for five minutes that it was because he was a big fan of Gin and tonic and misunderstood, but really, the misogynistic wokeness has been an issue for years in the fandom, just like a lot of fantasy/SF fandom, so it doesn't surprise.

I am however, pleased to discover Gareth isn't one of them, because The Unicorn and The Wasp remains a firm favourite.
