Mariella Frostrup's latest advice column

Her response to a woman writing in saying that her friends' husbands are sexually harassing her is breathtaking in its victim-blaming. Her record on giving advice to women has always been dodgy, but this takes it to a new level.

I didn't realise that column was still going. I stopped reading it after she answered some poor woman a few years back who was late 30's and desperate for a child by telling her she obviously didn't really want one because she hadn't pursued the right sort of long term relationship and was living in a flat share which she wouldn't be if she really wanted a baby Confused and so to accept she had missed the boat....which made me so mad....and then a couple of days later someone linked in the comments to an article she had previously written whereby she said she had spent her thirties not finding the right sort of long term relationship but happily settled down at 39 and had a baby at 40.

I did work experience on a tabloid and their agony aunt letters were all fictional. Sometimes they contained a grain or two of truth from an actual letter

One of my English teachers had worked on The Sunday Post- he said everything, including the Francis Gay column (viewers in Scotland will know what I mean) was made up by bored journalists wondering how far they could stretch credibility.

LassOfFyvie · 02/06/2019 20:33

My mum is in her 70s and goes out with ''the girls''

I can understand that - "girls night out" is common usage and perfectly fine- but in the context of that letter?

LemonRedwood · 02/06/2019 20:48
Shock

Arse-handing thankfully happening in the responses.

Wow that tweet.

How is someone having their hands all over someone else Not a sexual assault and just them making a sexual advance?

AnyFucker · 02/06/2019 20:55

Yeah so now she is backtracking and saying she is misunderstood

Sort yourself out Mariella. Language is important.

LemonRedwood · 02/06/2019 20:59

The second line of her response makes it no less appalling.

And there are plenty of people who don't know how to take no for an answer which is why lots of women don't risk it.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 02/06/2019 21:07

Was she on glue when she wrote that? Unbelievably crass.

RoyalCorgi · 02/06/2019 21:42

I don't know whether the letters are genuine or not, but if you read Annalisa Barbieri's problem page in Saturday Guardian, she always treats the letters with the utmost seriousness. She starts from the assumption that they are genuine, which I think is the only proper way to proceed.

Shocking that such an article made it past even the first level of assessing if it were suitable to print!

What the HELL are the guardian thinking?!!

Awful patronising, condescending, misogynistic, minimising crap!

Slightly off topic - mariella is apparently 10 years older than me now, I'm fairly certain I remember her actually being about 15 years older than me a few years back - weird!

Outanabout might know perhaps?

Tartyflette · 02/06/2019 22:07

I've always thought Mariella Frostrup's er, 'advice' column was far more about her than the poor sods who just want help with their problems.

And when she's not writing about herself it's wiffly waffly nonsense.

BitOfFun · 03/06/2019 04:30

I went right off her when she came on here to promote some charity bracelet that cost about £300. She just seemed to live in a bubble.

RompeCabezas · 03/06/2019 11:05

I see that the (logical) reaction to her comment is branded ''histrionics''. A reaction to a piece or column is not histrionic if it's men reacting.
