Stonewall petition

paulaspoodle · 01/06/2019 17:41

Has anyone got any theories as to why only 8,599 people signed the petition calling for Stonewall to reconsider its approach in terms of trans matters? I mean that's only about 0.6% of the LGBT population of the UK, even if you go by one of the lower estimates. And, of course, seeing as a few straight people would have signed the percentage is likely to be even lower. The petition was very well publicised and, as it's anonymous, there's no excuse about people being scared to sign. Surely if so-called trans ideology is such a problem for lesbians as we're led to believe then the figure would be far higher? Has anyone got any theories? The only one that springs to mind is that most LGB people don't see it as a huge issue

Or that not all those who oppose Stonewall's stance are on Twitter. It is a fast moving media which might mean those who dip in and out didn't see it.

Good reminder though, thanks, will get on with pushing it again. Any ideas where?

paulaspoodle · 01/06/2019 18:02

It is a fast moving media which might mean those who dip in and out didn't see it.

I doubt it very much seeing as it was also pushed heavily on a number of forums and by GC allies such as Glinner with thousands of followers.

Two theories:

  1. LwiththeT gained a lot of momentum and support last year after the Pride protests. I think many lesbians were surprised to discover that trans ideology was supposedly harming them.

www.vice.com/en_uk/article/xw9537/why-i-cofounded-lwiththet

  1. There are lots of petitions doing the rounds on issues that affect the whole UK population (ie Brexit petitions) and I don't imagine this one is on many people's radar.

Thank you Op. Excellent thread!

Here you are everyone:

The comments are so moving from thousands and thousands of LGBT people so distressed at the misogynistic and lesbian hating direction that Stonewall have taken. Well worth a read.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/06/2019 21:19

I had no idea about this
SIGNED!

theOtherPamAyres · 01/06/2019 21:25

Ruth Hunt, the Executive who had spear-headed a change in direction with catastrophic consequences for Stonewall, resigned.

Co-incidence? I don't think so. There was no way that Hunt could restore Stonewall's reputation in the gay, lesbian and bi-community.

The petition called for a review of Stonewall's priorities, but it has now become a job for those short-listed for Chief Executive.

The continuing presence of those signatories, and their comments, online is a continuing challenge to the new Stonewall regime and a continuing reminder of Hunt's legacy.

Hunt is Stonewall's Theresa May - ploughing a path without taking core supporters with her, and suffering the indignity of unrelenting criticism. The petition brought her failings into the spotlight. It did a job that no-one expected. It brought about regime change.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/06/2019 21:26

I mean that's only about 0.6% of the LGBT population of the UK

It's also almost double the Druid / Neo-pagan population of wales.
And the total of the Wiccan population of England and 63 times the Wiccan population of wales.

and it's 8000 more people than the Cornish speaking population!

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/06/2019 21:27

Indeed 8theOtherPamAyres*

The comments are quite heartbreaking to read - Ruth Hunt has such a lot to answer for.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/06/2019 21:30

and if you look at it in a mirror it's 995,8

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/06/2019 21:30

and upside down it's 8266

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/06/2019 21:33

Why are you upside down CaptainKirk?? Grin

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/06/2019 21:40

Why are you upside down CaptainKirk??

Because sometimes turning around and viewing things from another angle helps you see the differently.... at least until the blood rushes to your head and you pass out.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/06/2019 21:58

Methinks the OP has perhaps passed out having been presented with things seen from a different angle .

I'm currently the right way up watching the awesome Brian Cox talking about science and the solar system (accompanied by Holst's Planet Suite). Have grown to love scientists and their purveying of biological and scientific facts Smile

Scarlett555 · 01/06/2019 22:05

This may have been shared on another thread but an interview with Ruth Hunt in the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/society/2019/may/19/ruth-hunt-stonewall-moral-responsibility-fight-trans-people

insidev · 01/06/2019 22:13

It's true that we have no idea how representative it is. But even if one person raises their voice against something, that doesn't mean they are wrong and the community is right.

A large number of the "LGBT" community have been complacent in or actively working for the TRA agenda for a long time now. That they are beginning to speak out at all is incredible - as you say, this is their movement.

To me, it's hugely concerning that Stonewall received so many long, thoughtful and careful comments detailing real worries from their former activists, and they didn't properly analyse it, talk to their members or look into the safeguarding concerns raised.

Their response was really eye opening about how little they cared about their community.

Mner2019 · 01/06/2019 22:17

Signed. Thanks for this OP. I might have missed it!

FloralBunting · 01/06/2019 22:44

Ah, those caring, sharing types who post threads just to say "Lesbians? Hardly anyone cares about you. Ha ha."

Always saying so much more about themselves than the topic.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 01/06/2019 22:55

There's a petition on the parliament website calling to make online homophobia a specific criminal offence. It's reached 144,000 signatures which is pretty good going!

...buuuuuut hang on a second - that's not even 10% of the LGB population of the UK! And some of those fucking straight people have probably also signed it. And it was anonymous and there's no stigma attached to sharing it on social media

Surely if so-called "online homophobia" is such a problem for the LGB community as we're led to believe then the figure would be far higher? Has anyone got any theories? Could it be that even well promoted petitions don't get seen by the entire population of the UK? NO! It must be that most LGB people just don't care about online homophobia.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 01/06/2019 23:00

8614 now. 15 more signatures thanks to the op. Good shout OP. Might share it on my social media.

Ereshkigal · 01/06/2019 23:02

This.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 01/06/2019 23:07

OMFG, as if that wasn't bad enough I've just seen that 99.9% of the UK population hasn't signed the petition asking the government to fund research and treatment for children with brain injuries!

That's sick! How can 99.9% of the UK be totally OK with children having untreated brain injuries?!

Did you sign it OP? Do you care about the children with brain injuries? Signing The Petition for any given issue is the only way of declaring your political and ethical stance on it, so hurry up and tell us where you stand!

LangCleg · 01/06/2019 23:13

Oh, thank you so much for reminding me of this petition, OP. All those articulate, detailed, heartfelt comments. It's quite galvanised my resolve to oppose the homophobia inherent in extremist genderism.

You've made my Saturday night just that little bit better and inspiring.

Thanks again.

RespecttheCountryMember · 02/06/2019 00:45

Oh , I saw something about this on Twitter but thought it was a different petition. One I'd signed much earlier in the year.
But apparently not, so I've signed it now. Thanks, TruthIs, for the link, (and OP).

Sorry OP, no, I don't know why more haven't signed, or what kind of number would've been expected. Might ask around the dykes I know IRL and see if they've heard of it.

MaryContrary1995 · 02/06/2019 08:48

I'm on twitter and hadn't even seen this. Thanks for the heads up!
