Amnesty loses five bosses after report on 'toxic workplace'

Across many interviews the word 'toxic' was used to describe the Amnesty work culture as far back as the 1990's. So were the phrases 'adversarial', 'lack of trust', and 'bullying'," the report said.

Unite, which represents hundreds of Amnesty staff in offices around the world, revealed that one in three employees recently surveyed by the union felt "badly treated or bullied at work since 2017".

Maybe the new team will stem the blatant misogyny that's been pouring from every Amnesty media platform recently

I guess any workplace infiltrated by pimps would be pretty toxic

TheInebriati · 28/05/2019 22:02

How the actual fuck did they let things get that bad? How can they retain any credibility after this?

thecompletenonsequitur · 28/05/2019 22:14

I read today that they want to reposition themselves to campaign on climate change, but I think already covered by other charities. Maybe they should just fold.

God help us if they get involved with climate change! Lets see, prostitution should be solved by more prostitution, female prisoners should be incarcerated with men and then gas-lit over it, so climate change would probably be solved by... more plastic? A new airport? Criminalising a vegan diet? Who knows!

The cover of this is the Times says they're haemorrhaging money as well so I'm thinking "fold" is best.

"I guess any workplace infiltrated by pimps would be pretty toxic"
Infiltration. Exactly that.

All the pleas that came through the mail for Amnesty, looking for you to join or donate - they described themselves as working to free political prisoners, and similar. And they used to do that. Used to. They traded on that image of themselves. Maybe there's still some small team trying to do just that. But they got infiltrated and switched their efforts to sex-work-is-work and men-are-women.

Well, I hope they fold, and are investigated by the Charities Commission (or good journalists) and how this once mighty and respectable organisation was brought down is laid bare for all to see.

This situation goes back years.

Here's a link to an Observer article from 2010 but just search for Gita Sahgal and Amnesty to find an alternative source.

www.theguardian.com/world/2010/apr/25/gita-sahgal-amnesty-international

Gita Saghal questioned the links Amnesty had developed with pro Taliban organisations and radical clerics over Guantanamo Bay because of of their misogynistic views.

Did they listen? No. And here they are 9 years later. Actually it's longer as she first raised concerns in 2008.

And why the switch to climate change? Do we no longer have political prisoners?

LangCleg · 28/05/2019 23:25

Many moons ago, in youthful, less saggy-titted life, I used to write letters for Amnesty.

Wouldn't touch them with my bargepole's bargepole now.

Proper nasty piece of work behind this, and more I cannot say without being deleted. Amnesty Ireland is beyond the pale these days.

MilletSentToForceIt · 29/05/2019 09:15

Yes, they should fold. They are only looking at climate change as that’s where the young are focusing their time and money.

And if/when they do fold I hope Stonewall feel the fear, because if this can happen to Amnesty then any organisation is vulnerable.

I think this sounds bitter Sad but I spent decades supporting them, writing letters, sending them money, literally wearing the T-shirt. I would be sad to see the demise of that original organisation, but not today’s version, where sex work is great and TWAW.

nettie434 · 29/05/2019 09:23

I remember writing loads of letters as a member and making donations too, Millet & Langcleg. In some ways my disillusionment meant that I was not quite so shocked when revelations emerged about other big charities. That link from pachyderm suggests it truly is an international organisation but not in a good way. It's very sad when organisations move so far away from their original purpose.

This looks so much like deliberate entryism and destruction from within that I hope theres an investigation.
