Guardian article about UK women and girls bullied for menstruation

"Two-thirds of UK girls miss classes because of periods in culture of ‘stigma and shame'’"

A couple of comments on the guardian's twitter feed suggesting it doesn't happen because how would boys know a girl has her period? Right.

Is it maybe because girls have to deal with periods in mixed sex loos and call themselves menstruators nowadays?

Michelleoftheresistance · 28/05/2019 11:27

Doesn't it make you wonder why thousands of teenaged girls are desperately trying to identify into being male instead of female?

But this is supposed to be something we don't look at or talk about or regard as in any way a scream for help from girls in our society and female oppression, eh Penny? Which is why that inquiry is still hiding under your desk.

I’m excited that PM is involved with this. Is she not the woman who couldn’t tell us what a woman is recently. Bless whoever gave her those biology lessons.

I remember needing to be excused mid lesson due to my period, and having to try and discretely smuggle pads out of my bag and hide them up my sleeve. This was about 20 years ago when all pads were still giant of course. It's always obvious when a girl's on her period. I also remember boys stealing girls bags and going through them looking for pads and tampons to throw around/ mock girls over. I would hope that kind of thing doesn't happen now but I wouldn't bet on it. In a mixed sex toilet the sound of a girl opening her sanpro would be pretty obvious to all but the most clueless.

SarahTancredi · 28/05/2019 11:39

How they can look at information like this then decide to teach them boys can have periods too and make them share toilets with boys I dont know.

What kind if idiot cant see the problem here

endofthelinefinally · 28/05/2019 13:27

It should be obvious to anyone with even just a few brain cells that enforced mixed sex toilets are going to be very uncomfortable for a young teenagers dealing with periods.
When I was at school the boys toilets were in a different building from the girls. Any boys loitering anywhere near the girls toilets would have been in big trouble.
I don't remember any bullying around periods by any of the girls during my time at school.
The article doesn't say who is doing the bullying.

MenuPlant · 28/05/2019 13:39

Shouldn't that article refer to menstruators rather than girls?

Why no comments?

I hope someone on twitter has raised this.

Calling girls menstruators, especially in front of boys, might be a great way of demystifying this natural process, and stop the boys mocking the menstruators.

On BBC news now.

Ivestoppedreadingthenews · 28/05/2019 13:46

Anyone who has had to deal with extreme pain (passing out/throwing up) & flooding as a teenage girl will know that time off school is essential sometimes.

Classic 'dead hand of government' stuff, where the left hand not only doesn't know what the right hand is doing, it doesn't even know there's a right hand.

See: one department: 'let's make all women's toilets and changing spaces and groups and refuges mixed sex to be lovely and inclusive' (which will mean women of some faiths, disabilities, etc, can't use them any more but can't be helped - oh and means we skip over safeguarding policy and advice for children but it's all in a jolly good cause that's worth it and will prob. never happen and setting a lot of targets about it that LAs must meet)

another department: (running highly expensive inquiries into safeguarding disasters and issuing ever tightening advice on safeguarding policy and practice following safeguarding disasters and supporting LAs frantically trying to keep safeguarding disasters from being splashed all over the press and setting lots of targets that LAs must meet)

another department: (running highly expensive inquiries and issuing policy and advice to all LAs regarding women isolated from public life with regard to faith, disability, culture, particularly due to public health and supporting community cohesion as to how to make accessing public life easier, to raise attendance at groups, public services, and to plan specific activities like single sex swimming and setting a lot of targets about it that LAs must meet)

Give it a few years and there'll be some bright spark wondering vaguely in the press about why women have disappeared from public life, particularly sport and leisure and how to entice them back.

NonnyMouse1337 · 28/05/2019 14:09

I'm a bit confused.... The article doesn't go into any detail as to what is happening.

Who is doing the teasing or bullying? Boys, other girls, staff, all three?

Are those missing classes due to the bullying or is it due to physical things like pain and discomfort or is it due to poverty related issues like lack of access to pads, tampons etc so they don't show up?

It is really good that sanitary products will be available for free in schools, at least in England. There should be checks in place to ensure it is actually being rolled out.

No, we don't need any other words to describe a female. I'd go fucking nuts if someone said I was a mensturator to my face instead of a woman.

Wonder how people plan to validate themselves when this happens...

MenuPlant · 28/05/2019 14:24

I was being sarcastic.

Although, this is the guardian. They need to put their money where their mouth is, stick to their ideology and call girls menstruators in articles like this. Would go down like a lead balloon amongst general public.

Boys can still be called boys obv. No serious suggestions that I've seen too call them ejaculators etc.

gamerchick · 28/05/2019 14:27

Thank you, missed that. Grin

I'm waiting for how long it takes someone to figure out that when "girls do it too" is a main feature of arguments against single sex spaces yet you cant use it when you use "inclusive language" .

If you cant use the word woman or girl as to not offend then you shouldn't be able to use the words to your advantage later on.
