Found via tweets from TENI

"We welcome the adoption of #ICD11 during the 72nd @WHO World Health Assembly (20-28 May 2019). Trans-related categories have been formally removed from the Chapter on Mental and Behavioural Disorders, to the Chapter on Conditions Related to Sexual Health." t.co/kkNBBDWskQ

"This change did not come overnight, but through the tireless efforts of campaigners, civil society organisations and networks from around the world working to #depathologize trans health care in @WHO #ICD11. Particularly proud of our colleagues in @tgeu @ILGAWORLD @GATEOrg "

Is this really good news for people with gender dysphoria? I don't get it, personally.

This is what happens when even science becomes politicised (see also Nature recently). Imagining you are the opposite sex and believing your female brain has been mistakenly put in a male body? Definitely not a mental disorderHmm

2rebecca · 27/05/2019 12:49

If it's not a psychiatric disorder then why should the NHS or any health system treat it? Medical treatment is for diseases and illnesses, not lifestyle choices.

OldCrone · 27/05/2019 13:17

The NHS seems very confused about gender dysphoria.

While biological sex and gender identity are the same for most people, this isn't the case for everyone. For example, some people may have the anatomy of a man, but identify themselves as a woman, while others may not feel they're definitively either male or female.

This mismatch between sex and gender identity can lead to distressing and uncomfortable feelings that are called gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a recognised medical condition, for which treatment is sometimes appropriate. It's not a mental illness.

Then under the heading "What causes gender dysphoria?", they list a number of intersex conditions. No debate/no discussion seems to have resulted in nobody understanding transgenderism, and in this case, confusing it with intersex. It is worrying that the NHS appears to have given this so little thought.

Is it normal for lobby groups to have such influence on the WHO?

Surely the NHS should realise humans can't change sex...

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/05/2019 14:10

Choosing your name, appearance, preferences, hobbies, all of it completely regardless of social sex stereotypes - absolutely not a mental illness, I'm all for it. A male who comes to work with long hair and a dress a la Eddie Izzard before he lost the plot, great. Smash those stereotypes and be yourself. (Females have already been able to make masculine choices for decades less policed.)

Believing that you can change sex or that some women have penises or that the penis is a female organ if the person owning it says so is a quasi religious belief. Also not a mental illness, I'm all for respecting belief. I expect mine to be equally respected.

Whopping lack of empathy, consideration or care for others, needing to invade and overturn other people's boundaries, narcissistic or abusive behaviour, irrational entitlement, irrationality and inability to deal with facts, exhibitionism, sexual acting out and offending, violent and aggressive behaviours, inability to cope with challenge or people saying no to them - yeah, there's pathology there.

Also the high level of diagnosable conditions over represented in trans populations,.

JackyHolyoake · 27/05/2019 14:30

ICD10 did not have a section named "Conditions related to sexual health"

icd.who.int/browse10/2016/en#/II

It looks like this is a specially created new category.

I wonder if this will have any impact on obtaining funding for treatment?

OhHolyJesus · 27/05/2019 14:39

Are boob jobs still being done on the NHS? Also treatment of smoking related illnesses could be seen as a lifestyle choice, I certainly think it is as I used to smoke and chose to give up. I was thinking about this the other day and it occurred to me that actually this is where the NHS went wrong. If it just concentrated on keeping people alive it might have been better. I think mental illness needs treating too but now the NHS is there as some kind of tool for happiness and does back up lifestyle choices. No wonder it's broken.

Just to be clear I think there should be help for mental illnesses but now it seems that mental illness and suicide is used as a claim (or threat) to get what you want and for free. The examples I will use are the news story about the trans women wanting electrolysis on the NHS as it affected this person's mental health (gender identity) and the case of the Equality and Human Rights Commission taking the NHS to court over fertility treatment ahead of reassignment surgeries (the case was dropped but it cost time and money to defend against it).

Amazing isn't it, the power this small group has. I think the WHO have made a big mistake here.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 27/05/2019 14:42

So are they saying transgender is to do with sexuality?

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 27/05/2019 14:47

Surely the NHS should realise humans can't change sex

I wouldn’t place any bets on that one.
The realities of human bodies have gone out of the window and have been replaced with the validation of feelings.

JackyHolyoake · 27/05/2019 14:49

If "gender identity" ideology is detached from mental health the use of threats of suicide as a bludgeon become meaningless, which is a good thing.

I think it might turn out to be helpful for it to be classified as a sexual health issue. The association with mental health was used to impart a sense of urgency about receiving treatment, which can no longer be the case.

This new classification, ironically, reduces the whole business down to chromosomes, gonads and genitals! Ha ha! [Exactly what they currently claim it is not about.]

BickerinBrattle · 27/05/2019 16:32

This is likely related to how insurance coverage is provided differently and with more limits on it for mental health care than for physical health care in the US.

BickerinBrattle · 27/05/2019 16:38

It also means the HCP treating don’t need to have any mental health specialty.

DpWm · 27/05/2019 16:53

smoking related illnesses could be seen as a lifestyle choice
Addiction should be treated sensitivity and it's a bit more unfortunate than a "lifestyle choice"
Sorry that's a tangent so...

Being trans is unquestionably a lifestyle choice, as apparently agreed by the NHS. It's Not a mental illness, so what is it exactly?

This decision I think ultimately helps the GC cause.

Being trans is an identity like being a Mormon or goth, or Catholic or whatever, which anyone can opt in or out of at any time in their life, unlike your biological sex or your race which is immutable and stays with you forever (but is unquestionably part of your identity).

PencilsInSpace · 27/05/2019 17:00

The newly updated ICD-11 diagnosis of 'gender incongruence' is dual listed. It's still linked to under '06 Mental, behavioural or neurodevelopmental disorders' as well as under '17 Conditions related to sexual health' Whoever is diagnosing has to specifically exclude paraphilic disorders. The paraphilic disorders include: 6D30 Exhibitionistic disorder; 6D31 Voyeuristic disorder; 6D32 Pedophilic disorder; 6D33 Coercive sexual sadism disorder; 6D34 Frotteuristic disorder; 6D35 Other paraphilic disorder involving non-consenting individuals.

WHO changed the coding in order to reduce stigma for people with 'gender incongruence' - thus shitting all over people with mental health conditions. Why not, eh? This movement shits all over everybody else.

"Trans identities are formally de-psycho-pathologized".
Thingybob · 27/05/2019 20:50

According to the WHO,

Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence

So who would think it appropriate to include HA61 Gender incongruence of childhood in that chapter when we see some children as young as 3 presenting at gender clinics?

AnyOldPrion · 27/05/2019 21:28

That clip Pencils. Another eye-roll moment for me. Reducing stigma by removing it from a stigmatised category (without any physical evidence to suggest that it was incorrectly categorised) rather than trying to reduce the stigma that category holds.
