Nick Cohen in the Observer

A slight antidote to the ridiculous Ruth Hunt article:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/18/when-the-far-right-crack-rape-jokes-part-of-a-systemic-bid-to-demean

Nick Cohen has a piece about the amount of abuse women receive both online and offline. He includes a reference to the Sonic Fox "What I do to Terfs" tweet.

It's a small thing, but a step in the right direction. I've always hoped Cohen would be a gender critical ally, but as far as I'm away this is the first time he's made any reference to the debate in his column.

I still can't click on The Guardian Sad even if it sounds promising

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 19/05/2019 18:28

Good article, really enjoyed it. Nick Cohen clearly Gets It.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/05/2019 18:43

I knew Nick Cohen would. He's written about attacks on free speech in You Can't Read This Book.

Mumfun · 19/05/2019 19:04

He says this though: But only the far right has a track record of violence and only the far right has misogyny at its core.

He obviously hasnt checked out the Womans Place and Fair Play for Women meetings videos with violence, damaging of property and intimidation from leftist trans advocates

The Observer, today, must have had about five separate pieces/articles which were either directly about, or referenced 'trans' issues. They are presented in a matter of fact way, as an everyday reality - which they may well be - but to me smacks of very conscious editorial decision. So much unquestioning and unintelligent stuff. Like the Ruth Hunt interview. Where did she manage to lose her critical thinking faculties? Seriously pisses me off! There are a few Guardian/Observer journalists who I do appreciate, though.

I've been reading/buying The Times of late, because of their questioning narrative on trans issues - however, I do find much of the rest of the publication quite stiff/stuffy/conservative. Don't feel comfortable with either publication really. In the same way I no longer feel able to vote for any political party wholeheartedly.

Gah! Troubling times.

I’m beginning to think that for many TRAs the trans bit is incidental. It’s just a handy vehicle for hate filled misogyny which is what it is really all about.

DpWm · 19/05/2019 22:04

Always 100% yes which is why TRAs are often referred to as AWA (Anti Women Activists) it's so much more fitting.

Erythronium · 19/05/2019 22:28

The Guardian brought in trans activists to advise them some years back and have had a positive editorial policy on trans ever since. There was also a huge scandal back in 2013 when Julie Burchill wrote a piece critical of trans in the Observer. She was hung out to dry by them and they withdrew the article and apologised.

Quite different to the days when they made Andrea Dworkin welcome on their pages. That was when they thought women's rights mattered.

....and yet there does seem to be a determination to attempt compensation, because apart from all of the trans articles and references there were one after the other of 'women's issues' stories.

Problem is they are ignoring the biggest 'women's issue' story there is; and that is the wholesale re-definition of womanhood to include men; and the 'transing' of young girls who do not want to be part of a constructed femininity; the silencing of women's voices and conversation; and the writing out of all references to to the word 'woman' in many public and official documents.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 20/05/2019 10:55

It's good to see the abuse of women as 'terfs' on twitter addressed from an angle of oppressive ideology and misogyny rather than through a trans lens.

as a PP says, I'm certain that the starting point for the people who abuse women on twitter for understanding that humans can't change sex isn't 'I support the rights of trans people', it's 'I enjoy verbally abusing women and this allows me to do it while experiencing a warm SJW glow'.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/05/2019 19:29

I’m amazed more people aren’t seeing that.

How can anyone see abuse directed at women and “helpful reminders” to men and not get this is misogyny in action.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/05/2019 19:30

I’ve read that four times now and can’t work out how to make it make sense. But you know what I mean.

DpWm · 21/05/2019 08:22

^ makes perfect sense :)
