I went with DD (7) yesterday to buy her some cricket whites trousers; she trains twice a week and is exited to have been picked for a tournament next weekend. We went to a big Decathlon store. Plenty of child sized cricket clothing in, but all labelled “Boy’s”. There is nothing about them that makes them “boy specific”’. They are loose fit with an elasticated waist. Plain off white all over, with a small manufacturer’s logo. There was definitely not a section of “girl’s cricket” clothing.

DD is delighted with her “boy’s small” trousers. I am really annoyed that they weren’t labelled “child’s small”. I was thinking of contacting the manufacturers (not a Decathlon own brand) and pointing out that girls and women play cricket too.

Would there be any for girls online perhaps?

(Agree that it's shit you couldn't buy in store)..

Don’t think I explained very well. There is no need for pre-pubescent kids cricket kit to be sex-specific. I’m annoyed that the default labelling is “boy’s” rather than “child’s”.

And no, there is no women’s cricket kit on the Decathlon website, although I will admit that women’s cricket is a very minority sport and probably not very cost effective to mass produce cheap kit Decathlon style.

That is really disappointing - especially as Decathlon own brand stuff seems to be just labelled kids.

I went into JD Sports with my DD a few years ago to buy her some shorts. I couldn't find any girls' shorts in the "junior" section so I asked a member of staff who confirmed junior = boys. I've never bought from JD since, and I buy a lot of sportswear. Of course boys' shorts would have fitted her perfectly well, but with everything branded blue / dark colours vs pink she was conscious that she'd be marked out as wearing "boys'" clothes. Where you can't tell the difference though when it's cricket whites it's even more stupid.

Try attempting to get running leggings for a boy.
Normally Decathlon is good and groups everything well.
That sucks OP.

My dc have beeb cricketing for 3 years. It’s only now that DS is developing a bit that anything boy-specific is needed, and even then its underwear rather than trousers.

tea under armour do great running leggings for boys or girls

Fakeflowersandlemonade · 12/05/2019 17:51

Yes I have noticed this as well. My DD cricket clothes are all medium boys including her club hoody. We also went to buy her a hoody from Primark like her brothers but the only girls ones they had were cropped. Just why? We ended up buying from the boys section in the end.

I can see that for the artificial sakes of fashion and style that boys and girls may want different looking ordinary clothes, but for something as simple as cricket whites, then there is no need. They don’t make “girls” trousers, children’s cricket trousers they do make are perfectly functional for both sexes. There is no need to label them specifically “boy’s” rather than “child’s” but in doing so they alienate young girls who play. IME, at U11 and U13, girls make up about 30% of cricket players.

decathlon is shit though if you are not over six foot as it is impossible to reach the top shelf. I had to stand on one of their wobbly bennches to access shoes for dd whho is definitely under six foot.

My girls team wear black leggings( misses point but easier to wash) have just struggled to buy girls pads( underwear sort) for hard ball playing 12 year old...

So I did email the manufacturers, and got a fairly positive reply. Must have got old labelled stock (but even so, it shows that they were just labelling as "boys" until recently.)

Thank you for your email. You are quite right to point this out.

Labelling where stock permits is a rolling change within the business following an ICC advisory to the broader cricket industry.

^We have changed on product where our stock supplied matches web and catalogue descriptions. Cricket protective equipment has fully changed as an example, Large Adult, Adult, Small Adult
Extra Small Adult, Youths, Junior, Small Junior & Extra Small Junior replaces what historically had gender specific titles. Womens clothing and specific labelling is already on range.^
