How are we supposed to reply if you don't include the username? Please link the thread.

I’ve got loads of suggestions, but unfortunately they were all written by women

Daughterofmabel · 09/05/2019 11:13

Yes please link op. I can think of a few choice responses to that!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2019 11:15

Non-men?

Never mind fantasy, that phrase is surely from a work of dystopian fiction ...

TigerCubScout · 09/05/2019 11:24

Reply saying you can't imagine there being many published fantasy books written by children - so she may be better to concentrate on finding books authored by women.

Outanabout · 09/05/2019 13:28

I'm a fantasy reader and have noticed recently that gender bs has started creeping into a fair number of newly published books Angry I read fantasy to escape reality, bit there's no escaping the reach of wokeness. I gave one woman writer a mental pass, thinking it was coincidence, but then when someone asked her a question about the treatment of gender in her books the word 'cis' was front and centre in her reply Sad She's a really good writer too, I'm devastated Sad

NotTerfNorCis · 09/05/2019 13:36

To be fair it could mean women, not transwomen.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2019 13:47

It may well be what was meant ... a following tweet included 'basically they don't want all their case studies to be men-authored'. Which is entirely laudable.

But I'm inclined to think only a mind which has somewhat lost its grip on the reality of there being two sexes would use 'non men' instead of 'women'.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/05/2019 14:00

Bit unrelated, but I've just seen the female author of a book I'm reading has posted this on Twitter. I'm very disappointed.

The book is about memory and quite a complex topic. She chose to lighten it up with frothy 'girly' comments that I felt were out of place. Now maybe I know why- she's a genderist. :(

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 14:30

Just look at the people who are backing her up. Just the the usual boring TRA trolls. Most people are disagreeing.

I don't read fantasy, I prefer hard SF. I've not particularly noticed 'wokeness' creeping into that particular genre yet. However, I recently started reading a near-future SF novel set in a Mars colony, where the author (a woman) introduced one of the colonists as "non-binary", complete with genderless name and unpronouncable pronouns. I read on for a chapter or two, but there didn't seem any plot reason that this character should be any particular gender at all; it appeared to be just the writer demonstrating her inclusivity. The writing wasn't all that good anyway, so I gave up on it.
There are and have been SF writers dealing with gender and feminist issues - Joanna Russ, Ursula LeGuin and Marge Piercy come to mind - and and some writers have played interestingly with gender. For example, John Scalzi has written two novels (Locked In, and Head On) where the central character's sex is never mentioned and is impossible to guess (just to make sure, the audio books come in two versions, one read by a woman, the other by a man). Anne Leckie did the same with her Ancillary Justice series.
There is a growing genre of 'queer fiction' where the characters are all the usual rainbow mixtures; like teen fiction, gay fiction and so on, it's filling a niche.

Oooh look, a daring challenge. Instant block, probably!

If that's so the OP should have used "women" because trans identifying males are not women.

Outanabout · 09/05/2019 17:08

I'm not the person whose tweet was shown upthread, not I asked the same question and was instantly blocked. That person seems to think she's a feminist, so you'd expect some engagement with women asking a reasonable question. She might even have an explanation for such a weird use of the description.
