Ok. Watched it.
While I agree actually it's extremely nauseating.

Then they drop this gem (attached).
Fuck. Off.

Barbie have done nothing but capitalise on sexist stereotypes, they're lying.
They're nothing more than every typical corporation that lies to your face then grabs your money.

I like the ad, but am cynical, in the extreme. Barbie is about making money. If that means dropping the sexist shite they've promoted for decades, then they will do it. Not for the good of girls, but for ££££

Joisanofthedales · 06/05/2019 09:28

Liked the sentiments but Barbie really doesn't encompass them.

Orchidoptic · 06/05/2019 09:55

Hmm... little girls growing up seeing impossible anatomical features as something to aspire to Hmm

scrappydappydoo · 06/05/2019 10:01

Oh please - do they think we’re stupid? Hmm

Genderfreelass · 06/05/2019 10:40

Like others have said, great ad but Barbie have done the opposite by reinforcing gender stereotypes and ludicrous ideas of feminity. If they want to try and go with the idea of ending the dream gap maybe have words with the dubious lobby group using them as the extreme end of their gender jelly bean chart. The dubious lobby group that rather than celebrating girls that like tech and science wants to turn them into boys.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 06/05/2019 13:18

Thanks for the laugh. "We're not done yet" - no because they never even started.

CountFosco · 06/05/2019 15:12

You've all had the same reaction I did. 'Oh, this is positive, oh, it's Barbie. No, sorry, still not buying you'. I know they've been doing the different Barbies for a while but as PP said they might do better to actually go after Mermaids and stop them using 'Barbie' as the female stereotype. That would impress me.

''Starting at age 5, many girls begin to develop limiting self-beliefs. They stop believing their gender can do or be anything.''

I don't think that its the toys that train girls to 'limit themselves'; I think its the evidence of their own eyes and the incessant message from society around them.

I assume everyone remembers this?

I can only see the abstract but there was quite a lot of coverage of this paper at the time, eg today.oregonstate.edu/archives/2014/mar/playing-barbie-dolls-could-limit-girls’-career-choices-study-shows
