Surrogacy: Why the world needs rules for 'selling' babies www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-47826356

Even the headline is quite critical ‘what are the rules on buying or selling babies’.

I’m pleased/surprised to see the BBC being so critical tbh.

My god. How did that get through?
The last time I watched the One Show (a couple of month ago) they had a piece about gender fluid changing rooms and another about surrogacy. Naturally very supportive of both.

When I saw the headline I was hopeful that it would be an article looking at the effect on babies of separation from their birth mother for the purposes of surrogacy, but it was only looking at the legal difficulties arising from surrogacy (it was written by a lawyer). So an interesting article, but only part of the picture.

Has anyone ever done any proper research on taking children from there birth mothers?

MeltedEggMum · 26/04/2019 20:45

I think only in the context of adoption.

Pandora's Box has been opened and the law has failed to respond.

This last sentence pretty much sums up our entire modern age.

Nope. The choice is between "the joy of a longed-for child" and "the exploitation of the most vulnerable". Those are the only things ever placed on the scales of justice. The health and well-being of the child is never talked about.

KarenTheCashRegister · 26/04/2019 20:55

I’d like to know what the cut off age is for buying and selling human being?

Beamur · 26/04/2019 21:04

I thought the article was good. Acknowledged why some people want surrogates but also that not all potential parents are acting in good faith and it can be highly exploitative.

TheBullshitGoesOn · 26/04/2019 21:51

I noted the complete lack of questioning of whether it was in the interests of the child.

Which it isn't.

Beamur · 26/04/2019 21:57

True. Children were barely mentioned apart from the baby with Downs syndrome who was 'not' abandoned and the Indian born baby unwanted by birth mother or prospective mother after the parents split. Very sad.

ChattyLion · 26/04/2019 22:01

I thought it was a great article. It would have been great to look at the long term outcomes for children too, I agree. I hope this is being researched.

FannyCann · 26/04/2019 22:03

I read that KK has commissioned another surrogate baby (4th child, 2nd surrogate), flew off the handle and had a rant, DH topped up myWineat the same time as turning up the volume on the tv, so it's probably best I leave it until tomorrow to make any further comment. AngryAngryAngry

Oof. Imagine that being asked on Question Time.
