More fair and balanced reporting from the BBC on lesbian day of visibility

A review of the No Outsiders programme that conveniently forgets to mention the whole "asking very young kids if they're male or female" thing. Don't worry parents, it' all just nice books about penguins - nothing to see here:

Do lesbians need more safe spaces? Yes! And the solution to that is to open a lesbian only club night. Plot twist - you don't actually need to be a lesbian or even a woman to attend, and the organiser has never heard of lesbian day of visibility.

I don't really understand the second video. She doesn't want older lesbians there? She thinks something like Lesbian Day of Visibility is aimed at different people to the ones who come to her club night?

When exactly is a women only or lesbian only space actually women or lesbian only? That last woman "yeah, lesbians should should be visible, innit. I'm not one but they should be visible"

In what sense is that night a lesbian only event? I am so confused.

OhHolyJesus · 26/04/2019 16:00

Desperately trying to appeal to woke folk, the agenda is obvious and it makes complete sense when you see their 'diversity' figures.

I can thank the BBC for being partially responsible for making me question any news story. I'm very suspicious now (and more stressed) but at least I feel more accurately informed but not believing a word they say.

I think this is code for "lesbians who don't like lady dick". You know, those out of date, stuck in the past, old lesbians. Like that article a while back about the division in feminism over sex work, which made a point of saying how the women against it were all "from the older generation". A nice bit of ageism to dismiss those who don't agree with you.

I can thank the BBC for being partially responsible for making me question any news story.

Seriously, me too. I'm very conscious nowadays of what the papers say, what they're carefully not saying, and how they're saying it. It's a very manipulative medium.

This is now such blatant hatred for lesbians, I am beyond angry. On trans day of visibility, trans people were centered to loud proclamations of admiration, acceptance and ally ship.

Why can we not centre lesbians on their own day? One fucking day. But no, not even today. Not one day, not any day. Never.

Because they give the ultimate fuck off to the patriarchy. That's why.

CardsforKittens · 26/04/2019 20:23

Damn! Makes me want to start a club night for older butch lesbians, with cheesy music. That’s now my idea of a safe space.

FloralBunting · 26/04/2019 20:43

I don't think I ever really understood the idea behind political lesbianism before. Even though my orientation is Bi, I think I'm beginning to see the sense in the idea.

I mean, I can see why many of those women liked the idea of a woman only night, that much came through in the comments about not being groped etc. It's like we can all understand the benefits of female spaces, and we all know that a lesbian is attracted to other women, but only some of us have seen that you can't rely on loose boundaries and trusting men to stay the fuck out.

Melroses · 26/04/2019 21:05

This part seemed to be subtly divisive to me. Like there are two sorts of lesbians, one is ok and inclusive and one is to be dismissed (excluded?).

Why did they have a man presenting a piece on Lesbian nightclubs - was he self-identifying?

Melroses · 26/04/2019 21:07

What was the 'cheesy music' ? (Asking for a friend Smile)

Yes, I thought so too. Boring old butch women, how awful their spaces used to be. We love "non-binary-people-and-women". They sound like they're reading that off a script.

FloralBunting · 26/04/2019 21:25

Oh, definitely a script - the first comment the organizer makes is 'we're a safe space for women' and doesn't even take a breath before the clause 'for people that identify as women' is out of her mouth.

Why would you need to specify that if your night was for women? Lesbians? 'People who identify as women' - We all know that is compliant code for "penis welcome, as long as it's a 'feminine' one."

Ereshkigal · 26/04/2019 21:28

Or even just a non binary one.

CardsforKittens · 26/04/2019 23:26

The host of the club night disparaged the “cheesy music” that she thought older butch lesbians listen to. But hey, I’d go with it. ABBA, Blondie, Madonna, Eurythmics, Fleetwood Mac, Diana Ross, etc etc.

I’m thinking Glasgow. There must be some demand for butch lesbian cheesy pop in the vicinity of these Glasgow Life cross dressing free-for-all gyms.

placemats · 27/04/2019 15:49

What is cheesy music?

placemats · 27/04/2019 15:54

I'd go with Joy Division, The Cranberries, Siouxsie Sioux and The Banshees, Saint Etienne

Melroses · 27/04/2019 18:27

Maybe we need a Cheesy Music revival. Grin
