Gender critical at work?

Candidpeel · 26/04/2019 09:35

Can we have a thread about being open about being gender critical in relation to your work?

Who has done it, what has been the response?

Do you tweet in your own name about this issue?

Has anyone been reprimanded, had a warning etc..?

OP posts:

I am. No problems, although it was a scary move at first. I don’t tweet and have no wish to.

GCAcademic · 26/04/2019 11:22

There was a thread on this last year. It would be interesting to know if things have changed given that these issues are now starting to have light shone on them:

I'm openly GC at work, but work in an environment and at a level where trans lobbying is not having an impact. The blokes I work with see the issues, but unfortunately aren't likely to think beyond what I say, or tackle their kids schools themselves.

I tweet under my own name too, which is ok at the mo, but now I'm looking for a new job I'm wondering if it's a good idea. We'll see.

I don't do twitter, and I have never posted on FB about this stuff. I have responded to a woke friends posts pn occasion, like when she was struggling with the Dolezal case - it seemed like a moment when she might be more open, though it didn't help in the end.

I work at home, so my family are the only ones who have to listen to me there.

youllhavehadyourtea · 26/04/2019 14:07

I mentioned the cross dressing men in women's changing rooms to my boss . ( it's vaguely relevant to our workplace). And he instantly fired back with a comment about it being 'like the prisons with men saying they are women and look what happened there'. I didnt say anything more.

I'm not on twitter or other social media.

AgnesNaismith · 26/04/2019 14:11

I am openly GC with my team but outside of that the company is very ‘media’ and other than not wanting to get into trouble, I don’t want to upset the trans people who work there.

HandsOffMyRights · 26/04/2019 14:19

I've spoken of my GC views to one person at work, following the screening of the Mermaids biopic, 'Butterfly.'

She asked if I'd seen it and, like so many, believed it to be a story about helping to set a child free.

I'd previously been silent on the issue, but safeguarding, child protection and the exploitation of children is probably my largest area of concern regarding this MRA doctrine.

I talked to her (without scaring her) about the current climate - and she had no idea what was really going on. I mentioned I'd been involved in some campaigning.

This is important because she is also the head of HR, so I made sure I talked about orgs and policies wrongly using gender instead of sex in relation to the EA and the impact this could have on HR.

The rest is softly, softly. I choose my timing wisely and try to relate it to the women I work with. When the Susie Green calling the police on Caroline Farrow story emerged, this led to another team member voicing her concern over self ID. Cue another one on one conversation where I sprinkled in some other information, but not too much to scare her off.

We have mixed toilets so I regularly make a point of raising the issue that I would welcome single sex spaces and how poorly the men treat that toilet. How it puts me off going. How I am forced to hold it in to avoid going.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 26/04/2019 14:53

I am openly GC at work, it's been fine. But then I'm not in a role where I need to be seen to be Woke.

I've talked to various people about it and views seem to be mostly along the lines of "all this shit is getting out of hand now". We had gender neutral toilets installed (in addition to single sex, or single gender, not sure what the official position is), cue much eye rolling.

We are a Stonewall org, I think, too.

TirisfalPumpkin · 26/04/2019 15:40

I am. Feel like a lone voice as the whole organisation is thoroughly Stonewalled, but have had a few minor successes. I’d like to say more about specifics but I don’t want to be outed.

I’m too lowly for it to have caused me any major professional problems - although I have had a lot of ‘off the record’ support when I’ve said things publicly. Private messages and emails. This has made it worthwhile, although it causes me a lot of anxiety. I feel caught between needing to tell the truth and trying to stay employed.

The problem is no one with managerial clout dares challenge the ‘do everything Stonewall says’ orthodoxy - which isn’t very healthy, when you think about it, are they similarly reticent about challenging bad business decisions?

DuchessDumbarton · 26/04/2019 16:14

OP thank you for this thread. I have thought about starting one myself, but am ashamed to say that I am afraid to draw the ire on my head.

My professional representative body has drunk the koolaid with guidelines that include the marvellous phrase "men can be pregnant" too.

I am incensed- and trying to find a way to coolly dispute this, without marginalising myself. I cannot afford it.

I am entirely GC at home and children now roll their eyes and beg me to shut up when I get started. Nonetheless, one of them succinctly stated recently something along the lines of "in order to be transgender, you have to completely buy into society's gender divisions....and I don't".

I have serious concerns about the impact on safeguarding children.

Things are changing!

Parent I salute you

pejorativelyspeaking · 26/04/2019 16:43

Wrong thread

samsamsamsamsamsam · 26/04/2019 17:09

I am: I have had discussions with a couple of close female friends and sent some talks. Particular Meghan Murphy at the Vancouver library.

Turns out they all agree 😂 but it was scary.

Weirdly enough (or not so weird) is that the only people who have parroted TWAW are lefty blokes.

StopThePlanet · 26/04/2019 18:36

I'm out as GC but for LinkedIn (don't talk about it there) and an inactive FB account (never posted just have it for family) I don't use my actual name on any social media platform.

I think because I work in predominantly male-dominated industries no one is vocal about being pro-TWAW/TMAM - doesn't appear to be on their radar. These are very dirty, sometimes dangerous, and physically intense jobs done in extreme heat with 12hr+ workdays requiring trade education and licensure - I don't see anyone on HRT (regardless of purpose) applying for these jobs.

Long story short, being GC at work is no big deal for me for now... being GC in my actual life is another story and is shared with some caution. I'm American so I suspect my experience may be much different than yours.

servalan7 · 26/04/2019 21:30

I'm GC at work, no-one in the office believes twaw but they are mostly straight men and most certainly wouldn't entertain lady peen. A lot of my friends are very woke though (they even use that term and we're middle aged!) and when I've pointed out the conflict between self-id and women's rights they shut down the conversation.
