Boy Scouts of America abuse scandal

Similar to what has come to light in Ireland, abuse known about for years and nothing much done about it. With such cases being exposed, and probably law suits following, you'd think organisations dealing with children would be taking safeguarding more seriously, rather than less.

You'd think.

"He also revealed that files maintained by the BSA lists more than 7,800 alleged perpetrators of sexual abuse, a figure that was not previously reported".

Just when you think you've seen it all.

I saw a graphic a while back, showing the map of Britain with areas where convicted sex offenders in the Scouts operated.

It’s awful. Prior to having kids and then finally confirmed by Saville abuse coming to light, I’d been one of the ‘liberal’, child abuse is rare, suggesting there is a paedophile on every corner is just hysteria, etc, etc. Now I think children are a ‘class’ who are very vulnerable. They seem very vulnerable in institutional settings and if you actually hear the experiences of people who were kids in the 40s-60s, when children had more freedom to travel alone and roam over a wider area than they tend to do now, there are horrific tales of people who preyed on them.

The scouting scandal is really just more evidence to me that children need safeguarding and that some adults will take any opportunity to abuse them.

I read about the demand this morning from a US new source (NBC).
I'm really glad that this is finally coming out. I've always suspected that there was something terrible going on with the Boy Scouts and possibly the Girl Scouts as well. Most of the former Boy Scouts I know started in Cub Scouts made it through to Boy Scouts and fell short of becoming Eagle Scouts - some have odd stories and some have completely benign stories. I've only been around and interacted with a couple of guys that made it through Eagle Scouts... and let's just say they were very guarded and very awkward and avoided conversation.

The below is a more detailed version of the OP's posted article if you're interested here it is: www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna997786

As horrifying as this all is, now that the Boy Scouts are also allowing girls to become scouts in their organization I fear that this will get much worse before it gets better. And, the Girl Scouts allow boys in their organization. Completely destroys the single-sex scouts concepts of boys learning with boys through recreation and girls learning with girls through recreation.
