Foreign Women aren't Women.

They are a subset of women not worth funding. Or even campaigning for. Because they don't win votes.

Women's refuges should be for women in need. End of! Sad days 😕

Southall black sisters have a campaign about this;

''Southall Black Sisters and the Latin American Women’s Rights Service are jointly hosting a public meeting to urgently discuss the failure of the Domestic Abuse Bill to properly include migrant women from state protective measures for abused women. What we have is a draft Bill that utterly fails to deliver anything of substance, especially for migrant women. Only two pages out of the 196-page government response are devoted to migrant women. As things stand, abused migrant women who are at risk of the most serious and prolonged forms of abuse, slavery and harm cannot access justice or protection if they have unsettled immigration status. They are effectively excluded from the few protective measures that are contained in the Bill.''

That’s appalling.

An abused woman with children, whose right to remain in the country depends upon her husband’s visa is in a horrible situation.

If she leaves him, she risks deportation without the children, leaving them in the hands of their abuser. She may have poor language skills, making it difficult to navigate the pathways to find support.

:( that's awful

If a woman needs help and a shelter she should get it . Shouldnt matter where she is from

ArabellaDoreenFig · 20/04/2019 10:09

Funny because I don’t hear any of the woke crowd calling for refuge women to be included in women’s services - wonder why that is?

And yes it is a disgrace. Hopefully the more light that is shed on this the more we can push back and start to see meaningful legislation and policies to enable secure and properly funded women’s refuges.

Why are Madigan, Muscato, Peto et al not up in arms about this ?

What is abundantly clear here is that Women's Shelters are not helping women based on need, but based on the political framing of various groups decides whether they are important enough to economically support.

It's through the lens of neo-liberalism and that's being supported by all the current political parties including Labour who are supposedly against this.

All women are equal except the ones who are not. The ones who deserve it, the ones who should have known better, the ones who should just fuck off back to where they came from, the ones who follow the wrong religion, the ones who should be educated, the ones who should just get over it and the ones who have the audacity to have been born female and have XX chromosomes.

If Women's Shelters are not serving THE most vulnerable in society, who ARE they serving?

This thread is very confusing. Is it about the US as there are no women's shelters in the UK. There are however some, though not as many, women's refuges.

Assuming this is meant to be about the UK(is this the article? www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/domestic-abuse-non-british-women-refused-help-no-recourse-to-public-funds-a8877041.html a large number of women's organisation have been campaigning about women who have "no recourse" to public funds (try googling).

The problem is the bizzare way refuges are funding. Basicallly they get their core money by the women who are seeking refuge claiming housing benefit. So if you aren't eligible for benefits, then you aren't going to get housing benefit. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45121975

If you look at Women's Aid's web site for there snapshot report (each year they take a shanpshot based on info from refuges that are part of the federation) it shows that every year thousands of women dont get a place in a refuge. www.womensaid.org.uk/what-we-do/campaigning-and-influencing/campaign-with-us/sos/

This article reports that "funding for women's refuges cut by nearly £7m since 2010" www.theguardian.com/society/2018/mar/23/council-funding-womens-refuges-cut-since-2010-england-wales-scotland

If you are worried about women's refuges not having enough space for every woman seeking shelter the best thing you can do is write to your MP and local councillor. Or help form a support group for the refuge in your area and find out how you can support them.

In some areas councils have take tne decision that they will no longer fund Refuges but just offer women hostel accommodation and just say they are a homeless person.

It seems quite likely that in a few years we will look back and realise that it was probably only for about a decade in the late 70s early 80s that there was a general acceptance that women needed support and practical help to escape a violent relationship. The backlash against women's liberation continues to undermine a general awareness and acceptance of the need for women only support services.

Angry Sad

Over all

Having recourse to public funds adversely affects women who have had children and taken time out to care for them while supported by a partner. I can't remember how long you need to have worked for to have recourse to public funds, but a gap having babies doesn't count.

It is not just refuges, but claiming any universal credit for themselves and their children.
