Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

trying too hard to be gender neutral

Just been reading guidance linked to from the D of E website (under campcraft) for dealing with periods on expeditions - all incredibly gender neutral and inclusive, "people with periods" not girls/women, etc, and asking that if the information is copied, the language remain gender neutral, as "not everyone with periods presents as female", etc. Fair enough.

But then they say that pupils might not feel comfortable discussing periods with "someone who identifies as male". Surely that shows that they've not even thought it through, and have just gone through replacing every time they wanted to say 'man' or 'male' with 'identifies as male'. If I were a teenage girl going on an expedition, the last person I'd want to discuss periods with is actually someone who 'identifies as female'. I'd like a woman, regardless of presentation. Or if I really had to, a man, one who wasn't pretending to know what being a female was like. This is one case where they actually need a proper word for someone with the biology that means they have periods, and identification has nothing to do with it.

I ask because DH is very involved with DofE and doesn't think this fits with their ethos.

It's the 'resources' page of their website, where they have various resources listed under different categories.
This one is under the 'expedition' section, and 'campcraft'.

This is ridiculous (and similar to the ridiculousness put out by Scouts and Guides).

It suggests that expedition leaders should not know the sex of the young people they are responsible for, only their 'gender identity'.

That is dangerous (what if there is a medical emergency?).

Most obviously if an expedition leader notices a girl (female...) has a patch of blood seeping through her trousers, that is likely to be one kind of minor situation involving sparing embarrassment, whereas if a boy (a male boy....) is bleeding from the crotch that is a whole different kind of emergency.

The links in the TRA web continue to be revealed. So many are making an excellent living from selling these “training” services to Councils, the NHS, police etc

Makes you wonder if all this rubbish is just aimed at making lots of money. Training, raising awareness, advising, fundraising, producing publications etc. These all create employment and generate funds.
