Sussex Police censured over murders of two women whose reports they ignored

Trigger warning for lethal male violence:

www.channel4.com/news/sussex-police-censured-over-two-separate-cases-of-women-murdered-by-their-former-partners

Why do they have to learn lessons? They're police officers, they're supposed to know how to deal with crime and violence. They've been doing it for hundreds of years.

They're very woke though which must make them feel better about being useless crime fighters

Channel 4 were covering this. Awful - and sadly not unusual Sad

BishopBrennansArse · 09/04/2019 21:04

That'd be the same sussex police whose idea of dealing with disability hate crime is to send a text message to the perpetrator and not even visit them.

JamB4cream · 09/04/2019 21:29

I saw the report on C4news, just so heartbreaking, those poor women and the families left behind.

Erythronium · 09/04/2019 21:30

They do fly the trans flag on days of importance for trans people. Isn't that all that's required? No need to take crimes against vulnerable groups seriously, that's so 2005.

OP posts:
ZebrasAreBras · 09/04/2019 21:38

The police are misogynists.

That why they've grasped this whole "trans" hate crime thing so thoroughly, while women are murdered.

MilletSentToForceIt · 09/04/2019 21:55

This is the same force who repeatedly insisted, against all evidence to the contrary that, unlike neighbouring forces, they had not seen huge increases in knife crime. Thanks to a journalist who couldn’t understand how Sussex could be immune to this, so investigated further, it became apparent that they were not ticking the ‘knife crime’ reporting box on their computer system!

Questions have to be asked if they are fit for purpose, I am sick of government/public bodies using the ‘we recognise our errors and will endeavour to do better’ defence. Actually it’s not even a defence, it’s a pathetic excuse.

Maybe less time prancing around rainbow flags and more time thinking about the rest of their population.

My mum had to phone the police on my step dad at the weekend. Third time in a decade. He was kept in all weekend and has been charged with breach of the peace. They just don't take dv seriously enough. The police were amazing but said when it gets passed to procurator fiscal they will only go for a charge they can defo get a guilty for.

I don't think she's taking him back this time though but seriously worry for her safety now she's broke away. He won't like it.

ShesABelter · 09/04/2019 22:00

And third time in a decade is only the times she's had the balls to call them. There has been many many episodes of domestic violence.

Erythronium · 09/04/2019 22:06

So sorry to hear that ShesABelter. Hope your mum will be OK.

Daily Mail covers one of these cases:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6904405/Officers-face-disciplinary-action-fining-victim-wasting-police-time.html

Shana Grice was murdered by her obsessed ex-boyfriend Michael Lane in 2016

Teenager reported him five times to Sussex Police but instead she was fined £90

Lane's trial prompted widespread calls for action to ensure victims are taken seriously by police.

He pursued Miss Grice by fitting a tracker to her car, stole a house key to sneak into her room while she slept and loitered outside her home. It later emerged 13 other women had reported him to police for stalking.

littlbrowndog · 09/04/2019 22:18

They won't learn lessons, and no one will hold them accountable if they are shown not to have learnt them. It's all meaningless platitudes until the publicity stops.

NicksWife08 · 09/04/2019 23:59

When being harassed, intimidated and threatened by someone who has a previous charge for GBH, Sussex police advised I should talk to the person and ask them to leave me alone before they would do anything. This was after them listening to a voicemail that threatened physical violence.

Also when we had a joy rider smash into 5 cars in our road in the middle of the night, despite the officer recognising an offender sat at the top of the road, they decided it wouldn't be worth a chat with him because he was better known for arson, not this sort of thing. Turned out that he fancied a change to his criminal record and it was him!

This doesn't surprise me sadly.

Those poor women, and hearing Michelle's pregnant sister's call to the police was heartbreaking Sad

Sussex police aren't fit for purpose. I'm so angry, we are half the population - we matter!

JessicaWakefieldSV · 10/04/2019 07:20

Awful Sad

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 10/04/2019 09:09

As much as I am appalled with Sussex Police for the way this was handled, they are certainly not the only force with serious failures when it comes to protecting women.

The independent investigation report into the death of Alice Ruggles in Gateshead in 2016 was recently published, pointing out numerous failings in the approach of the police (and the army given that her killer was a soldier) from becoming aware of stalking behaviour. There needs to be a serious overhaul in the way the police throughout the country deal with the scared and vulnerable women who come to them for help.

Popchyk · 10/04/2019 09:40

I'm really sorry that happened to you, NicksWife.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/shana-grice-murder-stalking-police-sussex-a8862611.html

This piece in the independent describes how Shana Grice was fined for wasting police time. Before being murdered. FUCK

Drookit · 10/04/2019 09:47

The police force nationwide does not seem fit for purpose. The constant refrain of 'learning lessons' means zilch. It carries on and on.
Of course it doesn't help that the money for policing the country has been reduced to a tiny amount.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 10/04/2019 09:50

fined for wasting police time. Before being murdered. FUCK

Jesus. This is grim. Then we see women questioned for tweets while this shit goes on.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 10/04/2019 09:51

It's truly despicable.

People wonder why women don't approach the police for help when they are stalked, or raped, or assaulted, or harassed. This is why. We aren't listen to. We aren't supported. We aren't protected. We are blamed, disbelieved, and put into impossible positions by the establishments that are supposed to stop this from happening, while abusers are left to carry on until they kill us.
