The one time quoted in the article, just under the 3.45 qualifying mark, won't get them anywhere near the top places. I think to qualify for the women's elite class you have to put in a 2.40 or under.
Which doesn't alter either the principle of the thing (nothing to stop a good male runner, as opposed to a crap one, self ID-ing and scooping the prizes) or the fact that this is 3 women done out of marathon places they would otherwise have qualified for.
(The boat race is a good example to give - rowing really favours tall, heavy people who can bulk up their muscles easily. For instance, at over 6'2", that Aussie rules footballer, or the American college basketball player would have a huge advantage in rowing once they'd picked up the technique.)
