So here's a little painful yet eye opening fun for my US sisters and all of our sisters abroad. While I am not a fan of polls, I recognize Pew's expertise and transparency.

Want to know how the US values traits in women and men? Have at it...

What stood out to me...

Value for Women (100% Positive): Beautiful
Wait, what century are we in? Oh ok, that's right we're like super progressive and women totally like are seen as equals so it is like ok to value physical beauty over all other qualities, totes . Fucking shoot me now.

Value ONLY used for Men: Provider
Cool story bro. Yes it is actually an important trait for both men and women.

Many positive traits are valued in both men and women. However, some shared perceived positive traits is a shitty consolation prize for power and leadership being perceived to be positive traits in men only.

Oh, that's depressing. And the idea that compassionate is a negative trait for men? I hope I've misunderstood the graph...

StopThePlanet · 06/04/2019 19:40

No you read the graph right. Sad

Depressing reading but fantastic moving graph, I did like that!

StopThePlanet · 07/04/2019 00:22

So much yes! The interactive graph is so wonderful - too bad what it conveys mostly sucks.

Proves that gender stereotypes are alive and kicking, which is quite disheartening

Found this really interesting.
I've gone and spontaneously shared it to some ppl on Whatsapp.

StopThePlanet · 07/04/2019 17:11

Glad you found it interesting - I certainly did. Smile

That is both interesting and slightly depressing.

One thing I would point out from reading the report is that they seem to have asked people what they think society values rather than what they value. And that does tend to lead to greater dichotomy and more stereotypical responses.

But it’s still depressing. The results for “powerful” are particularly frustrating.

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/04/2019 17:56

And “compassionate” that that should be considered to be a negative trait in anyone is really, really depressing.
