NUS Women's Campaign

Apologies if there's already a thread for this.

NUS Women's Campaign - "The national voice for women students in HE and FE"

states that it will never be a place....ever for TERFs. They said that in response to someone pointing out that 'TERF' is a slur.
This is in response to the University of Cambridge SU 'How to spot terf ideology'.

I remember when we the first ever nus women's officer was elected.
Looks like the boys decided that if you can't beat them, join them.

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 00:32

The NUS are laughably woke. They are forever confusing themselves about whether poly used as a short form of polyamory/polyamorous erases Polynesians, and suggest that jazz hands are used instead of clapping in their conferences, but oh the cultural appropriation!

FloralBunting · 05/04/2019 00:35

I think I may adopt ☆Jazz hands☆ as a thing when I see an especially woke bit of old hairy bollocks.

FermatsTheorem · 05/04/2019 07:36

As an aside (and this is meant as a genuine point, not a "how to out-woke the woke" parody) I have never been able to understand why (predominantly white) students who are trying to do it to signal their inclusivity advocate jazz hands.

I love jazz. I've watched lots of clips of jazz performers from many periods in history and never seen any of them do "jazz hands" as part of their act. I have however seen clips of Al Jolson (in the context of historical documentaries about racism) doing jazz hands as part of his racist parody of jazz.

I just don't get it - jazz hands to me just always conjures an image of a blacked-up white racist pretending to do jazz.

Yikes

Fermats, it's an excellent point, of course, and the unconscious racism is something that is probably the oddest feature of some of the woke worldview.

Jazz hands, on the one hand has become simply a dance move in the modern age, but you'd think people like the NUS, educated people purporting to be concerned about historic injustice, would think a little more carefully about the background and connotations before they advocate for something.

I mean, I say that and know that a big AWA argument is that black women are only women in the way that men who want to be women are women, so there really isn't much point expecting sense, but still...

FermatsTheorem · 05/04/2019 08:11

I just did a quick Google - it turns out "jazz hands" is the name hearing people give to the motion for clapping from ASL, which doesn't actually look like Al Jolson style jazz hands at all but is more of a vertical flapping motion.

I couldn't see any black writers objecting to it, so maybe I'm getting offended on someone else's behalf (bit like the numpties who complained about the use of the word niggard - the president of the American NAACP had to patiently explain the completely different etymology and why just because two words might sound a little bit similar didn't mean they were the same).

Cuntysnark · 05/04/2019 08:15

Aah Fermat. When I used ‘snigger’ my woke child suggested I find another word...

FloralBunting · 05/04/2019 08:19

Oh yes, I've seen the SL symbol for applause. It's similar to jazz hands, but not identical, no.

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:21

Except the NUS Women's conference in 2015 actually said that people should do "jazz hands."

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:21

I guess maybe they thought it was near enough?

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 05/04/2019 08:22

The second video demonstrates the 'jazz hands'. BSL for applause.

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:23

Not massively fair to any blind people though.

BertrandRussell · 05/04/2019 08:27

To be fair, every dance class across the country uses the term “jazz hands”. I think I will let them get away with that, personally. And if there are people upset by applause then why not do something else? They are allowed a bit of studenty nonsense anyway. But the TERF thing is a big deal. Let’s not get distracted.

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:29

I was just pointing out how ridiculous they are.

CharlieParley · 05/04/2019 08:33

That tweet is incitement to violence. A crime. Has this been reported to the police?

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:35

Re the statement I don't think any formal complaint will get anywhere. The NUS are a lost cause. Look how they nurtured Bradley. And their stupid Trans Campaign said even worse.

Ereshkigal · 05/04/2019 08:35

Yes agree the linked screenshotted tweet should be reported both to Twitter and police.

Anlaf · 05/04/2019 10:22

It looks like the tweet has been reported, but the tweeter (who "spent 16 years of my life as a woman" ) is doubling down

Poor kid, is all I can say

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 05/04/2019 11:07

Honestly, these young women....

When they hit their mid to late thirties, once they have had a couple of kids, are ever so slightly incontinent, have gone through feeding their kids, are so over hormonal contraception but have to stay on it because their partner is being a baby about going to get the snip, they are now working 4 days a week in a career they have largely sacrificed to have their kids, whilst also doing the lions share of keeping the house going as well....

They will look back on their time in the NUS and they will fucking criiiiiiinge.

DodoPatrol · 05/04/2019 11:17

That's a very nasty-minded tweet, no matter how sorry you feel for the kid, Anlaf.

With some of these youngsters, I guess there's an element of 'I sterilized myself and cut my breasts/penis off and people still don't think I'm the opposite sex' -- easy to see how angry you could get at the world.

This is so true. These young people are being totally failed by those who have sold them a complete and utter lie.

Callmejudith · 05/04/2019 11:49

Logic is obviously not their forte
