Good news: new press guidelines "Dignity for Dead Women"

Ryan Hart's father was described as a "lovely man". Ryan Hart's father murdered Ryan's mother and sister.

The press coverage forgot the victims and showed sympathy for the coercive, controlling murderer.

That's going to change. Well done Ryan and the feminist organisation Level Up.

It won't bring his mother and sister back, but it will ensure that no other family has to endure the sickening support and bias towards a violent criminal.

This is good. What an amazing man Ryan Hart is.

DpWm · 03/04/2019 14:02

It's absolutely astonishing and sickening how many men who murder their wives, children, or entire families are referred to as "a good husband and father" by the press.

Ryan is amazing. Doing amazing work.
I hope there is change.

This is great news. Really highlights the need for responsible reporting.

This is good news. I do not consider Level Up to be a feminist org though.

I do not consider Level Up to be a feminist org

I noted that Level Up includes non-binary people, so I agree with you and wouldn't have described them as feminist myself.

However, they do describe themselves this way:

Level Up is a new feminist organisation. We’re a growing community of people working together to:
Change sexist rules, laws and behaviour
Support each other to challenge sexism in our own lives
We want the UK to be a place where all women and non-binary people are valued the same as men, whether it's at home, work or on the streets. And we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and make change happen.

They also describe GC women as not feminist Confused

Good news, but it’s not all done and dusted yet:
“The guidelines will be published later this month by the journalism regulatory body , the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso). While they are an advisory resource for now, Hart hopes to make them part of Ipso’s editors’ code of practice, which member organisations must follow or face fines of up to £1m for breaching. Member organisations include the Sun, the Times, the Daily Mail, and the Sunday Telegraph.”

I agree. I forsee that we will still have to challenge headlines about 'doting dads' and other obxoxious descriptions for some time yet. While the big brand newspapers may sign up, I find that local papers tend to quote neighbours about the 'great bloke' next door.

This is incredibly important work, well done to all involved.

I genuinely hate to have to point out that We Level Up partner with Mermaids: prideinlondon.org/news/2019/3/31/a-pride-without-hate

How can they get it and not get it at the same time?

severnbore · 04/04/2019 13:02

Don't want to derail so will start new thread for the Pride in London statement.
