Newbie to trans issues, please could I have some help?

I have gradually spent more time reading about these issues (it’s important to me as I would have been a prime target for transing as an undiagnosed autistic GNC child)

But I am getting very confused about all the people frequently mentioned on here because I haven’t been around since the start, and googling brings up a whole minefield of information and I’m never sure how reliable or biased it is, because I have missed so much, if that makes sense? (I also find some longer articles difficult due to my ASD and related issues)

I know names such as lily madigan, susie green etc but I am clueless. I know of Glinner because I love some of his series and gather he is very vocally on our side but that’s the extent of my knowledge. Oh and Miranda something, who was on that We Need To Talk documentary. I don’t have Twitter myself BTW but do read some threads when linked on here.

Would anyone mind giving me a who’s who of the key figures please or perhaps a link to somewhere reliable I can read about them (perhaps I missed an existing thread? It would be very helpful for me and perhaps others new to the subject.

Thank you Thanks

I'm not sure if there's a who's who list but you might find this thread helpful:

I wouldn't get hung up on people. It's not about individuals - it's about ideology, material reality and power structures. It's about institutions and organisations and lobby groups. It's about women's rights under attack, not from individuals but from organised power capture. Try these threads for starters:

And the posts by Datun are worth paying attention to.

Thank you hawkeye Grin

OP, there are probably too many people with too much of a chequered history for posters to fill you in, in one fell swoop.

The Miranda you speak of is Miranda Yardley. A transsexual who understands exactly where women are coming from.
He doesn't claim to be a woman, and he doesn't use women's facilities. He does have gender dysphoria, and so presents as female. As he's trans he has credibility when he talks about women's rights. Although transactivists hate him, for that very reason. (And I'm not misgendering him, because he is fine with a male pronoun).

If you want to know more, I'm afraid there's not really much of a substitute for just reading. You'll get there in the end.

You could try doing an advanced search on here, on the names of people you are confused about. You could advance search thread titles, which might give you more focused information.

You can try asking on each thread, too, but not everyone will be having a patient day.

The FAQ collates some of the most important threads. Pick through the bits that interest you most, the issues create more of a spider web than a linear narrative - or at least, that’s how it appears as we continue to learn new stuff in a piece meal manner.

If your interest has been piqued due to the rise in young women and teenage girls identifying as trans, then the key words that will be of most use will be:

Susie Green/Mermaids
Tavistock (aka Tavistock and Portland)
Dr Zucker (Canada)
Pique Resilience Project
Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria

And don’t be scared to ask questions - Mumsnet has a reputation as being a ‘Nest of Vipers’ but the real scary stuff happens on the AIBU or Fashion and Style boards!
Here we robustly disagree at times, but try not to police each other’s language or talk down to people - sometimes the long term posters feel a bit exasperated at the ‘Groundhog Day’ aspect of discussing the same thing over and over (especially with a ‘be nicer’ undercurrent) but we were all new once (and most of us got our arses handed to us at some point).

This is Miranda talking about the verdict in the court case.

He won his case against Helen Islan. Helen works at Mermaids with Susie Green, as marketing officer. Here is her twitter.

There's quite a broad list of people involved in both sides of the debate, perhaps too many to list. I've become familiar with Dr Harrop, his friend Stephanie Hayden and David and Aimee Challenor just from reading threads here. It's a lot to take in, if you need something slightly uplifting I would head over to Magdelene Burns' YouTube as she rips apart videos from pro trans people in a really sarcastic way and it always makes me feel informed and amused and the two rarely go hand in hand when it comes to this debate. I usually feel informed and then scared and angry!

BettyDuMonde · 01/04/2019 12:48

This is one of my favourite threads - not so much about the trans issue, more about freeing yourself from conditioning in order to be able to effectively advocate for yourself:

betty thank you, I was going to start a thread about how to overcome aspects of female socialisation and will start there.

Sorry for derail.

Erin Brewer is late discovery to me. She's churning out blog posts almost daily. She has gender dysphoria but doesn't believe affirmation is at all correct for children - obviously - or even most adults.

Wow thank you all so much for this. Lots to start reading, and great to have it all in one place. :)

I'd suggest reading the pinned post by MNHQ. I agree about concentrating on argument, not individuals, but it can be confusing when names are referred to in threads, as if everyone knows them. Acronyms too.

On YouTube, aside from the magnificent Magdalen Burns, there's Peach Yogurt. Here's her "What is a woman? Bicycle analogy":

Meghan Murphy runs Feminist Current, based in Canada but with an international remit.

Woman's Place UK has videos of its talks, at which some of the most prominent gender-critical feminists have spoken.

The GC names mentioned on these threads are likely to appear in these places too.
