Amazon Alexa gets 'my trans story' about how life is so great since having the FTM op

www.thelondoneconomic.com/tech-auto/transgender-voice-enabled-on-amazon-alexa-ahead-of-visibility-day/29/03/

'Amazon Alexa users in the UK will be able to hear the voice of a trans man ahead of this year’s International Transgender Day of Visibility on 31st March.

This project has been inspired by a desire to give this marginalised and often abused group of people a platform, allow them to tell their story and to have their voice listened to. The option will be available in the UK and will be activated by asking “Alexa, open the voice of trans”.

The voice will go on to thank the listener for wanting to listen to him and will proceed to tell his story, compiled from a series of real-life stories and case studies experienced by members of the transgender community around the world.

He will take the listener through the journey of his life with the listener being able to decide which sections they hear first, from his time as a child and hating girly clothes, to the difficulties he faced at school. He will also address the time he attempted to take his life and his transition. However, life has improved for him since his operation and he describes going on dates after his transition and his recent marriage to his girlfriend Aliyah.

Crucially, the voice will then invite the listener to visit a change.org petition applying pressure to advance trans rights on the UN’s human rights agenda in order to effect change on a global scale for the trans community.'

I'm speechless!

OvaHere · 29/03/2019 15:21

Will Alexa be keeping track of all the people who choose not to open the voice of trans or sign the petition?

Could be handy for rounding up a few more for the gulag.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 29/03/2019 15:24

What rights, specifically?? First we’re asked to accept that trans women are actual women; now they want this in addition to extra rights that real live actual women don’t have...

Sweet Jesus, it’s totally surreal.

And fucking Alexa broadcasting propaganda! I’ve just unplugged mine, fuck that.

Babdoc · 29/03/2019 15:26

I have never had the slightest desire to purchase an Alexa, and this latest revelation guarantees that I never will!

Carriemac · 29/03/2019 15:28

Can do ask Alexa never to open it and delete it?

littlbrowndog · 29/03/2019 15:28

Girly clothes blah blah

When Alexa going to do a piece on all the murdered women

Never cos we are not brave and stunning

ClingFilmApplications · 29/03/2019 15:43

Not on by default: The option will be available in the UK and will be activated by asking “Alexa, open the voice of trans”.

So no reason to unplug Alexa.

Might be a good way of finally being able to ask "what rights don't transgender people have, Alexa?" and not having a temper tantrum in return.

Or watching all your lightbulbs blow up, you know, whatever.

Imnobody4 · 29/03/2019 16:40

So what did Alexa do for international women's day?

Barracker · 29/03/2019 19:08

Wait - can a child accidentally listen to this story of attempted suicide?
Is there some kind of parental control to stop your kids hearing an ABC of how to hate your body and try kill yourself?
Why aren't the Samaritans getting more vocal about these constant breaches of the guidelines for suicide references in the media?

R0wantrees · 29/03/2019 19:17

He will also address the time he attempted to take his life and his transition.

I do hope Samaritans' guidance has been sought.

It would be utterly inappropriate without.

R0wantrees · 29/03/2019 19:20

sorry X post, same concerns.

Barracker · 29/03/2019 23:19

@MNHQ can you please explain why my post was deleted?
I was questioning whether there were adequate parental controls on Amazon Alexa to prevent children being exposed to discussion of suicide as per the reference in the OP. And why Samaritans guidelines on references to suicide were frequently not being followed - which is dangerous.

Why on earth was my post deleted?

HebeMumsnet · 30/03/2019 11:10

Morning, @barracker. Sorry to keep you waiting. We've had another look at your post and agree we were probably a bit hasty with that one. It doesn't break talk guidelines so we've reinstated it now.

And just a reminder for everyone while we're here, that it's of course fine to discuss issues such as this but please do ensure you are posting in a civil way and within our talk guidelines. Thanks!

HorsewithnoBackstop · 30/03/2019 11:14

Alexa, could you define the word "woman" for me?

HorsewithnoBackstop · 30/03/2019 11:18

Would somebody have reported barracker's harmless post?

Or do Mumsnet decide all by themselves?

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 30/03/2019 11:25

MNHQ, can you explain what guidelines Baracker’s post is supposed to have broken?
It’s a perfectly valid question Confused

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 30/03/2019 11:25

I was always led to believe that posts had to be reported before they were deleted, that mn didn't moderate the board independently.

Goodness knows why a safeguilding concern was reported or even deleted.

Barracker · 30/03/2019 11:28

Thanks for reinstating my post HebeMumsnet.

aprarl · 30/03/2019 11:34

Someone reported them.

There's a creepy group of men who've targeted many mumsnetters this way - the board has lost lots of posters who get banned after 3 deletions.

aprarl · 30/03/2019 11:35

That was at HorsewithnoBackstop

HorsewithnoBackstop · 30/03/2019 11:56

Thank you aprarl.

If it's reactive moderation then as I understand it an actual human (no horses!) has to take a look at the post which has been reported. And make a decision. Perhaps it was somebody new to the job.

The creepy men you speak of have had only one of my posts deleted.

We need a thread on "creepy men" and how there seems to be no creepy women. Even monsters like Kate Hopkins manage to be awful without the creep element.

BabiaMajora · 30/03/2019 12:04

Seeing as a transwoman was invited to tell their life story at my local IWD event on the 8th March, I’ll pass on opening the voice of trans tomorrow, thanks very much. In fact, I have set this year’s International Transgender Day of Visibility aside to read The Women’s Room and apply to volunteer at the local women’s shelter. #balanceforbetter

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 13:17

Well it's also Mother's Day, so hopefully most people will focus on the adult human female parents in their life. Even self obsessed transactivists.
