Child sacrifice in history

Don't know if this belongs in fwr or if anyone's interested in South American history at all, but I found this interesting so wanted to share.

Wondering about the mechanics that allow this sort of thing to happen. I mean, obviously you need a religion / belief system where the benefits of child sacrifice seem necessary.

But what is the selection process? Did parents forward their own child? Did this bring status /wealth to the parents? How was the child treated? Were they led to believe they were special, different? Did they believe that after there sacrifice, life would be better? I dunno, just rambling.

Very interesting. I just googled to read further and saw images of these mummies - it’s incredible how well preserved they are but also incredibly sad.

It doesn’t really sit right with me that these children’s bodies are put on display in a museum for all us of to gawp at. Seems exploitative somehow...
