Another parent got in touch with Somerset Live previously to say pupils are "getting mad and upset" due to the introduction of the mixed toilets.

The parent, who did not wish to be named, said: "Apparently the toilets contain all genders in one place, one marked male, one female and one male/female, all in together with no place for privacy.

"The girls are now worried about their safety and privacy, especially when on their periods when they will not even be able to request sanitary products from friends due to boys being in earshot.

"They are already get picked on by boys for their periods.

"There is also a security camera trained on the toilets now in the area of the cubicles and I have been told the locks on the cubicle doors are faulty."

Instead of arguing the toss about bloody handprints and Lady fucking Macbeth wouldn't it be enough that this:

They are already get picked on by boys for their periods.

..happens?

That's disgusting isn't it?

Qwertylass · 23/03/2019 10:33

@Milett

My class seem to manage with only being allowed to go at break and lunch. However back to the original post I really don't see what the school can do.

Imnobody4 · 23/03/2019 10:38

Pieceofpurplesky yes I'm joking but also what about the older boys perv accusations? And there is a security camera. I'm just sick of schools who treat children's views with contempt either for woke points or expediency.

hackmum · 23/03/2019 10:39

However back to the original post I really don't see what the school can do.

Maybe reinstate single-sex toilets?

Qwertylass · 23/03/2019 10:41

@hackmum

The rest of the toilets are single sex

burntdinner · 23/03/2019 10:41

With the walls of the cubical going from floor to ceiling on all sides I would much prefer this layout for both safety and privacy . From my own experience most of the bullying comes from same sex pupils anyway .

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/03/2019 10:41

We have mixed toilets/single sex toilets and accessible toilets (used mainly by trans children). Never heard a boy being called a perv. The kids moaned at first but don't mind it now - it's also cut down on the amount of trouble in the toilets.

HorsewithnoBackstop · 23/03/2019 10:44

Here's a suggestion-

Compulsory uniform? Teachers must wear a uniform too.

Mixed sex toilets? Teachers must use same facilities.

Anything that's good for the children should also be deemed to be good for the ganders, sorry, teachers.

DonaldTwain · 23/03/2019 10:48

Whole thing just beggars belief.
Whoever says girls schools are no longer needed wants shooting.

happydappy2 · 23/03/2019 10:57

I agree with the students, they weren’t asked if they were happy for the single sex provision of toilets to be removed, and don’t feel comfortable with the new set up. Organisations need to provide ample single sex ALONGSIDE mixed sex, if mixed sex if required to accommodate trans children. It’s interesting how some posters here are clueless about safeguarding, it is never best practice to have staff share toilets with students, for obvious reasons.

SarahCarer · 23/03/2019 11:01

Yes plenty of teenage girls find managing periods very difficult and get blood on their hands and plenty don't want to share any of that experience with boys or other girls which is why having some toilets with enclosed sinks is extremely important. This school seems to have the ideal mix.

SarahCarer · 23/03/2019 11:02

Some shared single sex spaces. Some private unisex spaces. Options for everyone.

hackmum · 23/03/2019 11:03

The rest of the toilets are single sex

Excellent. So single-sex toilets clearly work. Therefore no problem in making all the toilets single-sex.

IfNotNowThenWhy · 23/03/2019 11:05

I think the stuff about blood all over the hands is silly tbh-I have flooding every month and I never get bloody hands- and actually it's besides the point.

Girls don't NEED over dramatic reasons to not want to share toilets with boys. Girls wanting privacy from boys is reason enough.

MilletSentToForceIt · 23/03/2019 11:10

Horse Uniform for teachers and using the same toilets, yeah, why not? That would certainly cut down on the trouble in toilets (one would hope).

And yes, girls being teased for having their period is disgusting.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 23/03/2019 11:11

Having seen the state of the boys' toilets where I work, I'm not surprised at girls not wanting to share. The girls' toilets aren't great but the boys are disgusting. I went in there with the cleaner as someone had reported damage - there was a heap of paper on the floor, at least two loo rolls worth, with piss all over it. I was gagging. Cleaner said 'that's not bad compared to what it is usually like'

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 23/03/2019 11:13

My class seem to manage with only being allowed to go at break and lunch

Oh really? manage? so they have to pee/change tampons or pads at specified times then? Teachers used to insist on this rule at my DD primary and at a long age, up to 7, the kids peed their pants. This kind of strict toilet times thing is archaic and nonsense. If someone needs the loo, for whatever reason, they need it! Use it at break is a crap response to this problem.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 23/03/2019 11:14

I have flooding every month and I never get bloody hands

Congratulations. Others do. Why do other women feel the need to question stuff like this?

jellyfrizz · 23/03/2019 11:17

Never heard a boy being called a perv.

And yet: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/dec/12/are-we-ignoring-an-epidemic-of-sexual-violence-in-schools

Qwertylass · 23/03/2019 11:20

@Jessica

I teach year 5. They are fine and it cuts down on trouble in the loos

IfNotNowThenWhy · 23/03/2019 11:25

Congratulations. Others do. Why do other women feel the need to question stuff like this?
There's no need to congratulate me, it's not difficult.
Why question it? Because the narrative of bloody hands sounds unbelievable and is easy to dismiss. And like I said, it's just not the point. Toilets should be single sex in schools because girls and boys deserve some privacy from each other.
You don't need overblown reasons.

hipsterfun · 23/03/2019 11:26

No I don't find the Lady Macbeth incarnadined hands anecdotes credible- and I had very heavy periods.

Oh, are you the formerly delicate Lass, Lass?

If so, what made the penny drop was that the delicate Lass would often deny things happen, based on those things never having happened to her.

Well, I remember very clearly, in a central London rail terminus loo in the early 90s, my mid-teen friend emerging from a cubicle with bloodied hands. She had very heavy periods.

Definitely happens.

hipsterfun · 23/03/2019 11:28

IfNotNowThenWhy, do you want to tell me that didn’t happen?

anniehm · 23/03/2019 11:29

Use toilet tissue to wipe off any blood, if you use a mooncup, a toilet with a basin inside is actually far better which these have. There's cctv in the toilets at DD's college due to vandalism and drug issues despite it being single sex!

Funkaccino · 23/03/2019 11:39

I dont actually care if you believe me about bloody hands. Enough women have this happen to themselves to know it's true.

It's about as silly as me proclaiming you cant have perfectly clean hands after removing a moincup because I dont actually know the ins and outs of your vagina .

I used tanpons and frequently if I started to flood I would leak through causing blood on my pants and on the string.

Since using a cup i find the stem difficult to grab and need a bit of a rummage to pull it out and break the suction. Maybe it just falls out of some people. Is that award worthy?
